While admittedly we haven't seen an actual army, the way that the characters refer to the military in this strip and several others seems to imply that there's a substantial organization there. And, of course, there was the whole Mage/Priest Wars thing, which sort of implies that Tsuiraku has at least enough military might to beat the crap out of Veracia.

Motivation, well, no argument there.

It wouldn't take much organization for a wizard army to beat the shit out of Veracia. A smallish team of Battle Mages should do it.

Not to be a smartass, but that sounds like a "hit squad" to me. Either way...

On the other hand I can't wait for a "The Gangs All Here" scene. Which will be followed shortly by mass confusion.
Having hit squads from various different organizations colliding all in one place for various different reasons could be hilarious.

Who could potentially show?
  • Veracian church
  • The Order
  • Wraiths
  • Elves
  • Tsuiraku

Tsuiraku is the only one listed there that hasn't shown evidence of even having an army, let alone "hit squads". All we've seen of them are a few security guards at the warp gate.

There is also the issue of them not having much motivation. They don't give a shit what one of their more immaturely psychotic citizens is up to as long as she isn't being up to it in Tsuiraku proper. As for the rest of the world, even Veracia isn't stupid enough to attack an entire city full of wizards, even with Luminausious.

I just threw that one in there as a curve ball. We have not seen them do much but they do interact with the rest of the world and any sort of destabilizing event is going to be of interest to them. Besides Meji is not just a psychotic citizen, she is the grand daughter of a councilman, no matter how estranged.

And Tsuiraku fought their wars with Veracia with what, elementary school children?

A half regiment of Battle Mages would be all it took.

Well Tsuiraku is some sort of vague ripoff/copy of Japan, so using elementary school children to save the nation would fit right in.

Someone once said that Poe was thinking of ES as something like an RPG or standard issue fantasy novel from the main villain's point of view. Now Ian, oddly enough, seems like the perfect sort to go batshit and try ripping the world a new one. He has actual divine power coursing through his veins that he is channeling better and better. He has set himself to helping all those who ask for it or need it and he no longer has an excuse to let anything that is against his code of ethics stand.
He is, for the moment and for all intents and purposes, a god. He will be forming a religion around himself with every breath, even without intending it. The worshippers of 'Big Shiney Thing' won't like this and we will have something between supression/assassination and outright war on his hands. The elves can't stand to see a halfbreed abomination sodomizing their prize goddess and so will be out with everything their goddamn dying nation can still yeild in military might. And, oooh.... I think everyone else will find one reason or another to start random violence. Things are going to get fun.

And we have mutual annihilation in the middle.

And if the Bears win the Superbowl, it'll be a perfect year!

As a break from musing about Errant Armageddon, would somebody resolve a story-line conflict for me? Riley is spinning all this yarn about her past before coming to Santuariel -- but earlier Ian mentioned the crush he had on her growing up in Santuariel. Isn't there a problem there?

I predict the ending will feature Sarine, Meji, Leah, Lina Inverse and the rest of the female cast in a large orgy, which is then interrupted by Ian and Rape-kun. After the orgy, Ian goes to gay things up with manly buttsecks, Sarine gets banged by her old husband and/or Jon, various members of the female cast grow members and find new and exciting uses for it (shutting Ellis up).

And then Labrat realizes it was all a dream.

I wondered about that too. Perhaps she is older than Ian and came to Santuariel when he was a kid.

I'd agree with this assessment; we can easily assume that Ian is relatively young with Riley being significantly older. As they're half elves and thus have a quite substantial amount of time spent as fairly young adults, Ian could be say thirty with Riley being sixty or so, and everything works out. The numbers were just pulled from the air, but you get the idea.

Ian is what, 19? So Riley is probably somewhere around 30-50. Especially if the errant at the very beginning of the comic is any judge, since he was like 90 and didn't look too much older than 35-40.

On a side note: Why does she suddenly have straight, black hair like Leah in the 4th panel?

That's just shadow. You'd see it that way if you were looking at her really closeup from behind, and it's not straight really, but looks that way because we are so very closeup, almost in the back of her head, looking at her brains.

Ian's overconfident, truly overconfident.

Or fatalistic. Who's to say he couldn't heal forty or fifty people at once? Of course, he might kill himself trying, but the only person he cared about in the world was murdered while he was away risking his life finding a way to save hers. Bit of a downer, that.

Good chance, here, for Meji to grow up a little and show some human empathy. Something Bani did for her a long time ago, so she has at least one example to go by.

Nah, she still has a 12-13 year old's body where the hormones haven't even started yet. Trust me, I've raised one of those. Self-centered is a mild description.

Ohhh! I just realised, along with the slow maturation, you also get the extended puberty hormone swings. Instead of 4-5 years or getting bashed around by hormones, Meji gets around 10! Yikes! Poor Meji :-( Even worse, poor anyone around Meji.

So, is Riley the half-elf Sarine mentions here:http://www.errantstory.com/archive.php?date=2004-02-23 or just being full of it?

More like the priests got pissed that he was healing things they couldn't and had the guards tell him to gfto.
