Random conjecture:

Ian manages to Raise Evelyn from the dead, with no icky side effects and they set up shop in town healing all the sick people be they half-elf or human.

This goes on for about a week before the other healers in the town get pissed and try to run them out of town. Being the honorable sort Ian decides that he is causing more trouble than good by taking these peoples jobs and takes off with Meji for some hot half elf action.

Meanwhile Sarine and Jon are on their way to saturniel (sp?) and they meet Ian and Meji going the other way, (Or hell, Going at it) and convince them that there is going to be a lot of trouble unless they can find a way to hide from both the Ensigerium and the Elves. Ian is all like F*^% that and he goes off to knock some heads. Meji gets Ellis back and goes home. Then the world explodes due to completely unforseen circumstances involving a black hole and a bowl of extra spicy chili.

the end.

You know, that raises another question. If Exitalis is/was the "God of Death", were Anilis and Senilis "God(esse)s of..." anything? Or is there just Father God, Mother Goddess, and Icky-Death-Deity-Who-We-Won't-Talk-About? It seems that three gods is not enough to get all the divine work done if each one is just a "god of..." something (i.e. if each deity has it's own domain of responsibilities); you'd need a whole pantheon for that. Either that, or if you do just have the three, then Anilis and Senilis are responsible for the bulk of all divine dominion, and Exitalis got the short end of the stick. Getting to reign over death. Woo. That's exciting.

Could be very exciting. Two handle the design of living things, one gets a total monopoly of all that draws breath.... potentially including an afterlife. My guess, however, is simply that this god of death was just the one that thought up the automatic expiration date carried by mortals.

Perhaps you misunderstand death? It's a heavy responsibility. I doubt it's an "automatic expiration" or all creatures of each race would live to the same age and die.

If Exitalis's job was to reign over death, all his time would be devoted to that, measuring out life for the newborns, taking those who died in accidents, and imagine mass-deaths -- he'd have a backlog of dead to deal with. I hardly think it would be a simple job. If anything, I'd wager he'd be damned tired of it.

If you want to think of the gods as a trio, perhaps they all lived with the first races, but later split the worlds between them, Exitalis getting death, Anilis getting the world, and Senilis getting the afterlife (if there is one). Imagine handling the whole world alone, and then take a guess why Anilis went for a long nap.

... And so the world's first bureaucracy was developed to speed up the death process.*

* In the end, the Department of Death actually slowed down the death process due to the ever expanding levels of red tape and the need for a department of bureaucrats to administer the bureaucrats within the Department of Death.

You are imagining a timer that linearly counts down to zero or something, which is kinda a childish way of looking at death. The truth is that he perfected our modern product engineering principles, where each part is only made just about as strong as necessary so that the overall probability of any one component failing within a certain time frame gives the product the desirable lifetime.

Once the product dies, the humans throw it in a large pile of other stuff... Why would the god care? It's not like there's any reason he needs to do any recycling, is there?

Now that'd throw some fuckers for a loop

I don't think you people are understanding this properly. No. Do you people not read the previous chapters or something?

You're getting thrown for a loop just thinking about it, aren't you?

I agree with Tossrock.
