Peter, er, I mean, Ian is exploding. Is he going to take New York -- oh damn it! -- Santaruel with him?

I restate my former opinion -- there is an afterlife in Errant Story, and her soul is there. He cannot bring it back.

WHAT, NINE THOUSAND?

But that's not possible. Maybe the scouter's broken. Check it again!

"Nothing Beside Remains" indeed.

If the chapter ends here, it's 24 pages. Not bad at all; I'm hoping this is a trend toward much longer chapters than the several 14-page ones we had a row a bit ago.

Man, it would be AWESOME if he started consistently making 22 or 24 page chapters...

Though I imagine my reasons are completely dissimilar from yours.

"DEAR EVELYN,

Today I am leaving Santuariel. I fear I can not explain my reasons for doing so in such a way that they will not sound like I'm either absolutely insane or even worse, that I'm simply abandoning you to deal with our mother's mood swings and total apathy all alone. Truely, such a fate, I would not wish upon my worst enemy, much less my only sibling.

One of Maxwel's friends once told me a story about something that happened when she was young. I won't repeat it here for fear that if I write it down, I'll realize just how ridiculous it really sounds and lose what little courage I have driving me right now. I will say that if it really is true, then it might lead me to some way of healing you. Maybe to much more even… It's not much I admit, but I've been working it out in my head, and I think I have a pretty good idea where to start looking. Unfortunately, I'll have to leave Santuariel to do it.

Even if this all proves to be a giant wild goose chase, maybe I'll find something else that could help you while I'm doing all this traveling around. It's a big world after all, and there's plenty of stories about such things like the healing abilities of Veracian priests, or wandering monks who show up out of nowhere to cure some sick person… and then there's all the incredible stuff that people say about the mages of Tsuiraku.

I'm sorry that I have to go, but I feel like this is something I have to do. You've taken care of me for as long as I can remember, and I desperly [sic] want to pay you back for it but I'm afraid that all I'd be able to do if I stay here is watch you grow more and more sick. And the fact that you're starting to become so resigned to such a fate just proves how important it is that I at least try to do something while there's still time.

I promise I will come back.

Love, Ian"

This is due to the olive and garlic footrubs you are contractually obligated to give him after every chapter, isn't it?

Ok, so we weren't wrong with the "then he blows up the town/continent" predictions, we were just a little early

Nope. It's because that's a good length for standard comic book issues, which means that if we ever decided to chop it up into short color issues, the breaks would be more natural.

Or it's the effect of a few months of oxygen deprivation to the brain's memory structures. What was left of them after being slow-roasted in their own juices.

Either way, no gholas for Poe.

should have been titled OMGWTFBBQ!

beyond that, nice explosion effect and in color no less. You never cease to amaze me, Mr. Poe.

Poor reanimated corpse had only a few moments of pseudo life before being sent back to her untimely and unfortunate grave... .

oh well, when life gives you zombies...

you know the rest.

You aim for the head?

Apparently there is a whole new subgenre of zombie pulp fiction--and I do mean pulped humans--coming out in the last year or so. I'm avoiding it.

But, for a zombie novel that is actually original and thoughtful, I can recommend World War Z: an Oral History of the Zombie War, by Max Brooks. It is done in the style of real oral histories of battles and wars, with the author's character interviewing some of the 1 in 20 humans on earth who survived the "Walking Death" plague. Lots of creepy bits mixed in with drama, humor, stupidity, selfishness, heroism, and a little social commentary. Not necessarily for every zombie fan.

Anyway, the zombies being virtually impossible to kill with normal munitions--shrapnel and blast hardly slows them down, and you cannot manufacture enough napalm to burn herds of several million undead. They finally try semi-automatic weapons firing thermite loaded bullets, aimed fire at 100 yards, in close ranks just like the lads at Waterloo and Gettysburg. With the added fillip of psychiatrists walking behind the ranks checking to see if anyone is cracking under pressure.

"Don't fire until you seen the dead blackness of their eyes!"

Seconded, just finished reading this one. I liked the "chapters" dealing with the situation in China the most, particularly as to the start of the outbreak and the naval bits.

If I were Meji, I'd be running so fast I'd be halfway back to Tsuiraku by now. But then nobody ever accused her of being sensible...
