Y'know, I don't have any cash right now but I'm spreading the word on other forums... Sluggy, MT, Schlock, Scary Go Round, PvP and Penny Arcade for example.

Errant Story is well respected in the general webcommunity so I was posting here in case others want to do the same. I'll go post on my haunts now. Long live our good authors and their wonderlicious story.

As nice an idea as it is, I'd be a little wary of shouting too loudly from the rooftops.
If only because of the slight risk of being accused of either spamming or just hitting and running.

So don't be too loud about ES if you can help it, if only because you can turn off some people from donating.

Actor.

You're right, I'll be extra careful. I hope this helps, I think it should.

Poe and Imp over at Errant Story are in a financial crisis. They have turned to their readership to buy and donate in order to gather enough funds to continue their career.

Errant Story is a respected webcomic in the webcomic community and as a reader of webcomics in general I wanted to spread the word to other webcomics I respect.

Thank you for your time and if you're willing and able, head over to the Errant Story forums to see what you can do for this newly married couple.

OK, this is what I wrote + I changed the title to something that looks niftier and less greedy. I mean, we're only trying to get them their basics I suppose. :)

OK, I posted in Sluggy and Schlock Mercenary. I'll hold off and see what happens if any.

I dunno, don't just go to random forums and post that. Go to forums where people know who you are if you are going to post that. And most definately do not post it on The Vestibule.

You might want to make a banner for your signature in the different forums with a short explanation, or just a link to errant story and not mention the financial troubles Poe and Impy are on. I imagine some people might not appreciate that kind of post (which would be spam or off topic on most webcomic forums to say the least), while noone will object to a signature. I know I've gone to different webcomics from signatures in forums, so it must have some effect.

My concern is that people might misconstrue the situation if you go around announcing it on random boards, especially like that. This issue is nowhere near as dire as that sort of announcement might make it seem.

We're not bankrupt, we're not in dire danger of losing our home or anything... we're in some personal fiscal hot water due to a long-term lack of sufficient income, but so long as the donations and store orders go up and stay that way we'll be fine, and so will the comic. Most of the items I listed when talking about the money we needed to raise were one-time things directly related to running the comic as a business. The rest is a buffer zone for us so that we won't be in any more personal financial trouble even if the comic takes a dip for a month or so. That buffer zone has become vital, though... we no longer have savings to tide us over, because we used them in the down time last year.

If anything, this donation drive is really about reminding people that in order to give fans as much of what they ask for as we can, the comic HAS to make enough money to let us. We have a finite amount of time at our disposal, and we have the choice of putting that time into the comic or putting that time into a different job, but either way our goal MUST be to make a living. We have to make enough money on the comic if folks want us to do that instead of cutting back on it to pursue the more reliable income. Not because we're holding the comic hostage or anything, but just because we have to pay our bills, and the comic and all the stuff associated with it will naturally become a very low priority if we don't have the time or money to invest in it. Yes, donations from this drive will save the comic, but they're more like providing daily air to breathe than providing, say, CPR.

^-^'

I guarantee you will get your shit ripped if you do that at the Penny Arcade forums. It would be doing more harm than good.

Most places, no matter how otherwise Errant Story friendly, might react similarly especially if you are not already a regular/respected poster on the target site. Some would tear a strip of you even if you were already a regular/respected poster...

If you are a regular on a relevant forum, then I would suggest a message in your sig would be more appropriate - people will see it in your normal posts and spreading news of a cause in a sig (or just hawking your wares/opinions generally) is usually far less frowned upon than opening off-topic threads for it. Of course you'd need something shorter than Itterind's suggested text to avoid breaking sig size rules. Perhaps a link to a page of your own to explain in more detail if needed.

Oh, and if you do any of the above make damned sure that is it blindingly obvious that it is you that is spreading the word of your own volition and it isn't a campaign orchestrated, managed, explicitly encouraged or implicitly encouraged by the Powers That Be. Remember that the Internet can often exaggerate some undesirable human characteristics like putting 2 and 2 together to get anything other then 4, reacting badly to the result, and taking any attempt at reasonable explanation as meaning the explainer is part of the Grand Conspiracy... - and you don't want to accidentally direct some of that at Poe and Impy.

*nods

God Bless. ^_^

It should be ok, I think, it was just two and in subforums and rather humble one of them and the other one the basic set, will prolly get ignored and maybe flamed a bit. Leave it alone and don't poke it with a stick and it should be ok.

Maybe we could find some sponsors? Like those guys who sell lasers to the webcomic community. They seem to be making a major ad effort and helping you out might really enchance their prestige.

Just an idea.

What's the Vestibule? :)

Itterind, it's certainly an honorable and well-intentioned gesture to go out of your way to alert others to the current crisis, but as others have said before, it's not very necessary.

As you yourself have said, "Errant Story is well respected in the general webcommunity", and that being the case, i'm sure that everyone else who frequently reads this comic, (and seriously, who wouldn't be hooked after reading the first one they saw), would be more than capable enough to learn about the situation in the same way most of us here have: by reading the notices on the main page.

Keeping that in mind, all you'd really have to do to get people interested in contributing, is not much more than telling your friends about Errant Story, and providing a link so they can check it out themselves. That would serve at least two purposes - 1. it would increase ES's readership, and the word of mouth would help that to spread even further, and 2. all those people who become interested in the comic would, through their own intelligence and ability to read plain text, become aware of the financial difficulties which Poe and Impy are experiencing.

They should be able to put 2 and 2 together on their own, and come to the conclusion that a lack of funding could equal the lack of future comics, and nobody would want that.

Give people more credit. You don't have to spam message boards and become an annoyance to other communities to help out. If people don't already know about ES, doing that would most likely deter them from wanting to learn about it. I know that if i came to this board, and someone was spamming about how the World Wildlife Foundation needed donations to save the Uruguayan spotted swamp rooster, I'd be more than a little miffed myself. know what I mean?

Best way to spread the word about Errant Story, is to introduce it to some friends, (both IRL and online, sans-spammage). Even if the people you talk to can't, or won't donate, the people THEY tell might, or the people those people tell might. The rest should take care of itself.

- Ptrix

P.S. 50%!! Congratulations gang, let's keep it up!!!

I have to respectfully disagree (about spamming) as it was one minor thread in two different subforums each in a different comic (one which I had frequented on the forums, another which I had read for half a decade and posted once on) but I can certainly see your point and you're very right about spreading the comic to one's friends. I'll try that. :) Thanks for your feedback.
