Sarine hasn't fully internalized the fact that Sara can decapitate her with a round-house before she finishes blinking.

I don't think she leaves.

She'd have to perform time magic first.

Sarine is probably banking on being able to 'counterspell' and timemagic stuff, now that she knows what she's fighting.

And there's the possibility that Sara does wander off, and Jon goes after her.

Funny, I thought there was going to be a filler today...

Does Sarine look annoyed to you?

My bet is on 'Sara leaving only to follow them in secret until she resolves her issues with Jon.'

Its not just you I think Sarine's annoyed at having the baby sister along distracting Jon when she needs him to focus on Ian and what they're heading into. Killing the sister would potentially alienate Jon so she's letting her go and telling her to beat it. I also agree its unlikely that she'll leave that easily.

Was not expecting that at all.

Perhaps Sarine bugged her, expecting to be able to let the Elves know the location of the monks home base?

Looks like Sarine might have been eavesdropping on Sara and Jon the other night, and decided to let her go. Why? not sure yet, but Jon's probably gonna be pissed.

or maybe Sarine just wants some Anger Buttsex and thought that was a good way to both get it out of Jon, and get a little privacy at the same time

I don't think Jon is into incest anyway... just a thought.

No. Practicality. Time is an issue here. It is hella inconvenient to have to be dragging a prisoner after you across half a continent. Not to mention that having a member of the Ensignarium as a hostage might give the time-monks more reason to take action against them. Better if you can just wash your hands of the whole thing. Which Sarine is probably not going to be able to do, at this point, but she doesn't know that.

I'm thinking a little from column A, a little from Column B...

To rephrase what has been said before:

Sarine needs Jon to focus on Ian right now. Ian already attacked Sarine once, and would quite likely fly into a homicidal rage this time.

Jon would make the perfect person to keep Ian calm long enough for Sarine to work out what the fuck to do. Also, Jon would keep Meji from doing something stupid.

Sarine was no doubt listening to the conversation (que "what do you hear with your elf ears?") that Sara and Jon had the night before, and doesn't want Jon to get pre-occupied breaking the ironskin that Sara has developed emotionally.

Which is where the similarities between this event and where Jon and Sarine had a root ends.

This time Sarine can get rid of the problem, without fucking over Jon's head (which would make him HATE her this time, for sure), without killing Sara (oooh boy. "Elle and Amraphel, table for two") and minimising the amount of loathing she would have to face from Jon (simply because he knows she's still out there, alive), all in one swift move.

My predicted outcome.. is that Sara will stay, but only because she can't go anywhere else.

Poe: Your sophistication as a writer is really coming out these last few chapters.. character intruige rises like a flood for me.

Monday can't come soon enough for me :(

Uh . . . . okay, Zherical covered all that I wanted to say, including the compliment to Poe. Now I gotta go to work.

Is that the face of practicality?

Yay, Zherical is sane again. And my appreciation of the comic improved for it.

Actually, this action is exactly what you'd expect of Sarine.

Consider: She's no fool, doing this at a time when she's fully awake, magically recharged, armed and armored. Pragmatic too; having presumably overheard Jon's view of the manacles the previous night, she knows that a parting of the ways is coming eventually whenever Sara decides to get out of the manacles, so why not get on with it while she has the tactical upper hand? She is also astute enough, and sufficiently wise in the ways of humans despite not being one, to recognize probably the one time in the last five years when Sara, being still in emotional turmoil, will respond to a gesture like this without getting into little-sister-magic-zombie-of-slicey-death mode.

But what gets me the most is that this action is completely consistent with one component of Sarine's personality that I haven't seen discussed here: it is exactly what a good mother would do. From the first time Sarine appeared, way back in the prologue, she has had a kiss-it-and-make-it-better way of doing things that I suspect most of us can remember from our own youth (and if your childhood didn't have such a way of doing things in it, I genuinely pity you). She's the one character of the whole bunch who has consistently looked for non-fatal ways to resolve problems where possible. (Of course, it isn't always possible; no amount of mothering was going to fix Derren Felmel. But every rule has its exception.) And if it involves a certain amount of faith and trust in one's "daughter," well, that too is what mothers do, whether the daughter recognizes it or not.

So more than anything else, this to me is a "maternal" action. I wonder whether Sara will recognize it as such; she probably doesn't have a great deal of experience with human compassion, let alone compassion of the motherly type. I think she will.

Sarine is amazing.

Also keep in mind that familial relations for Elves don't have anywhere near the same meaning as they do for humans. I have the grand impression that Sarine has no idea why Jon even gives a crap about Sara, and that it drives her nuts because her focus is on the above-stated goals that Zherical was talking about.

Ah, but if there's one thing that we've learned so far, it's that Sarine is not exactly your garden-variety elf...

This mean Sarine used the craptastic handcuffs hoping Sara would bust out?
