Well, in this case, the apples fell together, but they're far from the tree. Both being cold blooded killers and their parents being simple working folk.

You could say someone cut down the tree, making both apples fall together but far from the original position of the tree. Then one of the apples kind of rolled away while the other was picked up by a time monk. And right around here the analogy kind of loses coherence.

...then Sarine picked up the one that rolled away and ate him...

So, has Sarine really paid so much attention to Jon that she recognizes all his facial expressions and mannerisms, or is she just making stuff up at this point?

Paying attention to people and things is what Sarine does for a living. She's a ranger, after all.

Spend a week or several backpacking with someone who gets on your nerves and you'll know a lot more about them than you care to.

I think Sarine just wants Sara the HELL away, without Jon being too pissed at her. If she did overhear, she knows that if Sara went away while they were asleep, Jon wouldn't suspect, so plan A is to have her run away. Plan B is to fight her, I guess... but I still think Sarines a bit over her head here.

As I wrote during the fighting, IMO Sarine's expression wasn't one of total shock at the Ensigerum using weird magic... But shock as in: "OMG, they're actually using _time_-magic... Are they insane???"

Looking back over that whole encounter again, Sarine didn't really get her ass kicked that badly. Warrel got one hit on her by surprise (for whatever reason, she wasn't expecting him to use time magic, at least not just then); she tried to counterattack but, having been hit off guard, wasn't incredibly successful and got hit again. Then Jon distracted Warrel long enough for Sarine to kick his ass.

Warrel's hits were nasty, sure (and could have been a lot worse if he wasn't toying with her), but getting hit twice by your opponent when they pull something highly unexpected on you, and then still winning when something unexpected happens to them in turn, isn't really such a horrible failure. Considering how well mere-mortal Jon was able to do against both Warrel and then Sara when his plans accounted for time magic, I imagine 3000-year-old martial badass Sarine could do quite well against young Sara here, even without explicitly negating her time-magic abilities.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong -- and I'm sure someone will -- but my impression is that the Ensigerum (or whatever the elf-trained humans were called back then) weren't using Time Magic the last time the elves had any contact/conflict with them. Without the Time Magic Surprise, the Chronomonkeys wouldn't stand a chance, so it's not as if Sarine was unrealistically confident given what she knew at the time.

Something else for people to keep in mind is that it was probably only Sara's warning that kept Warrel from dying before he ever even saw Sarine, when Sarine unleashed an extra jumbo large grande magic blast on his position while she was still up in the scafolding. Even with that, he barely managed to get out of the way -- see the next non-filler panel for where he's getting up from his landing from the dodge. (One of my favorite Sarine-geek moments in the comic, actually, comes at that point, when she's able to get down from the scafolding without using any magic (Warrel) and without hurting herself (Jon), but instead on pure skill.)

It's also possible that Warrel wasn't toying with Sarine on the second strike so much as getting in the hit he could while dodging the magic blast.

Anyway, overall, I guess I'm still a bit baffled by how unbeatable some people (not you, Forrest) think the clock ninjas are. :-?

Sarine isn't stupid, whatever else one thinks of her. I'd be stunned if she didn't actually have some kind of counter to time magic whipped up and ready at this point.

You know how it is. Some people see a large pair of teats and instantly think "Bimbo"

Even if she was one 3,000 years ago, she's survived the interim. No, Sarine isn't stupid nor does she take uneccessary chances. Sarine definitely has at least one ace up her sleeve and we can consider Sara's time magic covered, now that she's seen it.

I'm really hoping that Sara does try to attack Sarine, and that Sarine doesn't have anything which explicitly counters Sara's time magic, but that Sarine still manages to make a fool out of Sara on skill alone with some aikido-esque minimalist technique; lead Sara to charge into a tree at warp speed or something. Just to put the girl in her place, and show off how much of a badass Sarine is.

Ok, so I have a thing for tall redheads in armor and/or trenchcoats that could kick even my ass. So sue me.

Are you insinuating that most redheads with Sarine's physique couldn't?
Walk soflty, and carry a big gun. That's the only advice I have.

No, I'm just saying I have a thing for redheads with Sarine's physique. Well, and her attitude and skill, moreover - which is really the thing which would allow her to kick my ass. Being strong will only get you so far against an opponent of superior skill. Sarine does have such skill, which is what makes her such a badass.

Here here, redheads rule. :-D Yeah, hi I am new here. Didn't really see a place to introduce myself so just thought I would drop in unannounced. Though I have read the comic from the beginning and keeping tabs on it ever since. Back to Sarine, yeah I would think after you have lived 3,000+ years you tend to learn a few things. Its like my brother said once, " You never stop learning, even when you are old. Once you stop learning, that is when you start dying."

Which, I'd think, is doubly true when you're in a business involving homicidal gunslingers, homicidal half-elven psychopaths, homicidal elves wielding magical weapons and homicidal martial artists bending time (and also wielding said magical weapons). Except, I guess, the actual "start dying" phase progresses very rapidly into the "being very dead" phase.

Not "start dying" rather, "are dead". There are a few managers out in real life that need to remember that in regard to us elder geeks. Over 40 does not mean brain-dead.

Well it could mean either way. To stop learning you would have to have been killed or atrophy away, not working your mind or your body. I like to put both to work :-) .
