She could probably get work as a seamstress pretty easily.

Um...how do you figure?

"Seamstress" is a 19th Century cover story for a prostitute. It makes an excellent trade to declare when the police or census takers came by. One tavern in Seattle c. 1900 had 150 "seamstresses" living in its upper floors.

Maybe they had a seamsters' union?

I keep wondering the same thing.

He tried to sell Meji into child prostitution -- and somehow that's a comic moment according to some of our posters?

If this were a purely dramatic story it wouldn't be. However, it is part spoof/satire, so one would expect some exaggerated situations to occur.

More importantly, it's a believable moment/situation; ellis is merely an extremely intelligent cat. Trusting something like that as a peer/playmate/familiar to a child is reckless beyond belief and I can see why they appaerently stopped doing it after the first one or two product generations.

Meji probably only has him because she had the misfortune of being a fabulously wealthy kid with a mother that understood throwing wealth at her as affection and cats as eternal cute kitten-dolls. So she got the 1st generation $350 black-and-white TV that causes the occaisonal house fire.

OK, great, sure, makes sense.

Still doesn't address my actual question, which is, why does Meji keep Ellis?

Eh. Does anyone else feel put off by the closeup of Meiji's mother in the final panel? It feels, weird and odd to me. Poe did it before in one of the last time's we saw Anita and Paul, Anita suddenly looked like she aged about 10 years from the last panel. Almost like the extra detail on her face needed more refining to help maintain the youthful look in the picture.

Trying out something new for close ups Poe?

Nice to finally see Meiji's mom and how she acts. Here's hoping there's at least a few more panels of her.

Meji's mom reminds me here of another well-known seamstress, the Kim Basinger character in "LA Confidential."

Incidentally, count me among the ones puzzled by her living arrangement. She lives with Meji's grandfather in the earlier scenes of the story, so what's she doing here? And she "never had to work a day in her life," as we learned at the very beginning, so this isn't a workplace either. But if she did get booted out of the house, how would Ellis know how to find her, since that obviously happened after Ellis and Meji left town? Something doesn't make sense.

One possibility: maybe this isn't Meji's mom, but rather an aunt? Seems a bit unlikely, but after all, she hasn't been named yet. Ellis' invective doesn't prove anything; he's as likely to sass some other of Meji's relatives as her mother, presumably.

Over all these years, she must have regretted not buying that unicorn, even a tentacle monster would probably have been better.

I still want to see Rape-kun's adult mode.

By weird coincidence I am watching LA Confidential as I type, and you are incorrect good sir.

Lynn Bracken has the demenor of a queen; Meji's mom is appaerently a well-aged Paris Hilton.

Err... did she? I know Meji visited him while going to school, but I don't remember him actually living in the same house.

I think it's because her attitude changes from one panel to the next. When we first see her, she's still hitting on Jon. In the close up, she's wrinkling her nose at Ellis. That'll put a few extra lines in your face.

See here. This is the "real big ass, eff'n HOUSE" that impressed Bani so much, and her grandfather lives there -- yet she calls it the place where she lives. Does her mom? Not proven, but here, just a few strips later, Ms. Kenichi says that her mom "left" and will be "back" the next evening following a rejuvenation treatment for "one of her spells."

All of this is in the flashback sequence a few years before the current story time, of course. Possibly Meji's mom moved out in the interim. It seems unlikely, however, as she was still described as not having worked a day in her life when Meji and Professor Yukiri had their little conversation about the senior project.

All puzzling, anyway.

Could the woman that Meji's mom talks about be an assistant for her dad at the council?

I don't think she was necessarily talking about a *maid*.

Why would you want a personal assistant to open the front door for you?

It was damn near pedophilia when she got pregnant to Mr. Elfman... and she has been pumping a truely absurd level of magical and semimagical cosmetic treatments into every pore of her body. This is, of course, somewhat offset by the fact that she has abusing said body in every way possible. Drugs, booze, late nights on the town with strange tentacle monsters, the occasional D&D (IT LIVES) style critical failure with all that plastic surgery. But she has enough money to be as enbalmed as Madonna and Cher combined so it all works out in the end.

The pussy is probably still quite valid as a target... though there is a possibility that she has some horrible STD that has evolved to sapiency and can now burrow through latex. Well... besides Meji, that is. Still not as life threatening as Sarine's nethermaw and he certainly dove right into that particular abyssal cavity.

Jon should hit her... if only to creep the fuck out of Meji. Of course it probably wouldn't work as he is currently the only reasonable facsimile of a living being left on this planet which she has not yet put out for.

Damn... I hope Rape-kun turns out to be a herm.
After all, can a mother really be sure her little girl is going to turn out hetero... or, in this society, even remain female? Its good to slip a little leeway in there.

In a society this bishi, all that really means is tacking on a pair of tits and insuring the presence of some sort of nether-orifice. But Poe might have already filled the webcomic's quota for sexually versatile characters with the introduction of Riley.

Dickgirls. One is never enough.
Two isn't either. Regardless of how many penises the second one is.
Three... eh, maybe. We'll talk it over.

An alternate ending might be: Dickgirls... they're nature's Voltron.

Well in order

First yes I did mean granddad not dad that was a typo I missed sorry.

Secondly I also missed the speach bubble where she's saying she needs to convince the maid from her fathers house to come work for her and made the mistake of assuming since Meji lived with her grandfather when young she was still doing so since I don't recall seeing anything before this that indicated otherwise.

Thirdly I will read the wiki if it contains things not in the story itself?

Fourth I do actually try to correct myself hence why my mispellings are so different because I'm trying to get the right one.

Fifth yes I have actually read the archives hence why I thought they still lived with Meji's grandfather since in the flashback with Bani she does and I had missed one bubble in the currrent strip.

Sixth yes I do have a memory disability along with other mental problems.
