Just in case anyone is interested in the wiki and matters bureaucratic, here is a status report on the war against the spambots.
The host site has put a fix in place that appears to be working. There has been no more spam for several days now. A down side is that it's impossible to create new user names for the time being. That will get fixed eventually, though. We're about 80% of the way to disabling the spambot users that did get created; as soon as we're at 100%, we'll declare victory, at least against this particular attack. Unfortunately, there will be more attacks -- we know that several other wikis have come under very similar attacks recently.
Anyway, I've started to "unprotect" content pages so that they can be edited again (only by people who've already established user names, because of the inability to create new ones). Right now it's only a small part of the total content that's editable, because if it turns out that some of the perps still have access, we want to keep the targets available to them manageably small. But more are getting turned back on every day, and as the blocking of the spambots approaches 100%, so will the fraction of editable pages. This is important since we're obviously learning new stuff from current strips that should get incorporated into the wiki, as soon as we understand what it all means.
A permanent fix is still going to take a while, because it will require some software changes that the Heretical Monks can't make -- they have to be done at the provider end. In all likelihood, the permanent fix will involve some manner of restriction on creating new users. Details aren't resolved, but it may be something like: if you want to create a new username, use the message service here on the Forum to tell one of the sysops who you are and what you want the username to be, and then the sysops will create it. Getting that set up will have to wait until Impy is back from dealing with the death in her family.
Thanks for your patience, and particular thanks to all of the people who've helped beat these idiots. We're winning -- this one.
