And that let the cat right outta the bag.

By the way, could anyone explain their emergency to leave the city with Meji?

You mean aside from the whole "her father will kill her on sight" thing?

I'm wondering why Sarine thought it would be better not to tell Meji about Rarune's arrival. How would she then convince Meji to come with her, ask her to join them on the hunt/search for Ian?

Which she was told long ago. Also, this settles that Miyo had no clue about the Errant War and it's likely that her father didn't either.

Meji was very tight-liped then, probably too mopey to explain things and since probably nobody asked...

Because Meji was the key to finding Ian and the Elven Goddess and still is. Of course, in addition to Jon and Sarine's mutual motive to protect Meji, which Jon is now convinced that Sarine shares.

I think it also a safe assumption that Sara's been thoroughly briefed by both Jon and Sarine.

I think Meji's first response is going to be "Shit! Someone get me out of here, now!"

Both sides will think the other side is out to kill Meji, queue plot lines.

And Miyo's obvious and emphatic joy at this news sheds a new, maternal light on her earlier disappointment when she thought Rarune wasn't coming.

It's either: "girl! Your daddies comin' home now!"

or

"YESSSSSSS, my pointy-eared partners porksword will be MINE!"

I'd say it's a little from one basket, and a little from the other. She wants Meji to meet her father, but also kept herself reasonable looking for ~18 years just to please Rarune's eyes (if that's even what happened the first time).

IMO.. Miyo as a mother; fails. Miyo as a dedicated lover? Well. She sure has stamina there, it would seem.

hi hi

If its true that nobody in Tsuiraku knows about the errant wars, I wonder if Miyo thinks that Rarune will be able to take Meji off her hands for a while.

Not to be critical, but . . . well, yes, actually. I think it possible that Sarine and Jon have been together too long, It seems to me they are starting to speak with the same voice. A few chapters back you could tell the difference between their speech bubbles by their sentence structure, word choice, frequency of expletives. Sarine's dialog had a more formal tone to it.

Of course, that could just be me . . .

I'm wondering what Meji's reaction will be, and more importantly, what Miyo's reaction to Meji's reaction will be. Looking forwards to Wednesday.

Sarine is looking unusually sharp and determined in the second panel. Nice. 8-)

Sarine's as measured and collected as she always is, it's more that Jon is on war-footing; they're talking shop. Also I'm not sure 'bullshit' used as a verb counts as an expletive. Certainly not a gratuitous expletive.

edit: My guess is that's where the dialogue switch occurs, though. I suppose Sarine would more likely say 'bluff', 'decieve', something that goes better with the upper-class english accent she uses in my head.

How completely unnecessary!

Meji knows, though... doesn't she?

Which bits of dialog are you talking about? I actually did have to change some of Jon's dialog over to Sarine at the last minute.

Let me guess: second panel, last speech bubble? The sequence of the dialogue would call for that to be Jon's line, but it sounds much more like Sarine.

Anyway, I agree with whoever said there's nothing wrong with this exchange. It's two professionals at work, talking the lingo of their professions.

As Sarine and Jon work together more, she loses more of her contempt and he loses more of his edge. It's normal. The dialog works, as is.

Part of the reason that couples start sounding as one is that there is a lot less extraeneous crap and loose noise between them. It is this same crap that signposts personality traits for us. Without those signposts, a lot of the surface color goes away and they start to look and sound the same, when dealing with each other.
