Post subject:  7/23/07 - Pics from Otakon (Last year's Otakon)

Since I was unable to attend this year due to having a... you know... job, I thought the least I could do was bring you all along with me on a trip down memory lane to last year's Otakon.

Buckled in and ready to go? Good...

The Drive Up

Image

Some of the mountains we encountered along our long and perlious journey to the East. Nature's majesty unfurled in it's richest and most pristine, an incredible sight to behold that makes you wonder if there isn't some grand plan behind it all; some driving force existing between god and destiny that makes such natural wonders come together for us to enjoy.

We stoped here to pee.

Otakon - Day 1

Image

The Booth slowly comes together, a combined effort of our many talented and devoted team members who stopped their lives to attend. Note the rare and endangered Poe in the lower left corner. Had he realized he was on camera, the Poe would probably have ceased what he was doing to scowl disapprovingly at the camera, or fled into the wilderness looking for a McDonalds.

Image

Here's Impy having some fun with cosplayers dressed up as the girls from... hell, why am I explaining who these horrible people are to you? It's your damn fault I know about them in the first place.

Cos-Players for Soul Calibur. Note, of the three, we only get to clearly see the guy's nipple. Damnit, damnit, damnit.

Otakon - Day 2

Image

The Red Dino-Thunder Power Ranger prepares to behead an unsuspecting onlooker.

Image

Unable to actually find a mirror, I decided to take a picture of myself to see what my newly crafted 'Cat-Boy' Ears looked like. Yes, I'm lame. No, I'm not overly sorry. Yes, my head is that big in real life.

Image

Now in my cerimonial cat-boy ears, I pimp Poe and his works as best as I can, even offering my body up to young jailbait-esque fangirls in order to draw positive attention to our humble booth.

Image

Red Mage, White Mage, and Thief : Humble crafters who sold me my catboy ears on Friday. Not only that, but then proceded to go back to their hotel room and forge for me a mighty catboy tail out of the same material, so that I might complete the outfit. They were awesome.

Some of Otakon's dedicated janitorial staff.

Otakon - Day 3

Pictures of Day 3 do exist, I assure you, however I am not at liberty to release them at this time. I can't exactly say why, but it has absolutely nothing to do with anyone running over a hobo with their car. I don't know where you heard those rumors, but they are entirely unfounded and quite possibly not true.

The Journey Home

Image

Just outside of Washington DC, we see the most famous landmark in our nation's capitol... The Castle of Lions, from which Voltron rules with an iron claw and a blazing sword.

More pictures than this exist, and as I dig them out I'll add them to the pile; these are just the ones that I could readily locate at a moment's notice.

Meh. Downright sober compared to half the conventions out there.
Oh... and you look like the guy who is currently stalking my cousin.

That's YOUR cousin?

Wow, it's a really small world, isn't it?

A convention ... my life is so dull in comparison.

I wish I could have been there just so I could have kicked the ass of the Power Ranger in pic #6.

At least you spared us the sight of Mr. Sailor Moon.

Well, I'm not a monster.

However, if you really want, I can go dig up that pic Poe found of Dr. Rockso.

That just gave me a horrible idea for a children's book... Dr. Rockso and the Offending Package of Acen

I've still never been to a con, and I think it might be for the best. I'd be more out of place than at a chicken and ribs shop in Compton.

I went to the previous winter Comiket... _That's_ being 'out of place'.

Hundreds of thousands of people and I didn't see a single gaijin.

I live in Japan right now. That's nearly every day for me that I travel to a mall or go to Tokyo.

You think I haven't lived (and will be) in Japan?...

No, I never said or implied anything of the sort. I was just replying to you because it seemed you were directing a statement at me. I was simply telling you that I understand the sentiment more than you knew.

Just imagine. In forty years, all the same people will be going to cons.
Seventy year old fangirls. Somebody will have actually genetically engineered Rape-kun and it will have planted itself on Michael Crichton's ass. Some crazy, but still infinitely uncool, goon trying to market tapioca pudding supposedly made from senzu beans.

Oh, this century is going to be interesting indeed.

I don't really have too much time on my hands so I'll make this quick.

Hi, my name is Shane and I'm passing out flyers for Micheal Poe's.....

Sorry, wrong rant.

In any case though, I was one of the two volunteer helpers for Otakon '07 and I have to say we had a BLAST! There will be pictures up soon I imagine, but naturally we're all completely exhausted.

This is also my little note to Impy-chan.

I forgot your e-mail! But Kite and I made it back safely, we finally got on a plane at like 10:15am. I don't remember much of it though, I took a sleeping pill and well... died. I told you all I couldn't handle medicine!

I took Impy along with me to PhilCon last year. It's much more my speed, as I'm an aspiring scifi author, and I think I may have actually introduced her to an all new and terrifying aspect of Con-dom.

Con-dom? That didn't sound right.

Anyway, much to her amusement, she and most of our band of brave adventurers actually qualified for the... get this... the kid's rate to get in. The cut-off was somewhere in the mid-20s. It's not that PhilCon was covered in creepy old men and women... no, covered isn't the right word. Steeped, maybe, but certainly not covered.

Cat-ears. I'm in an existential crisis over cat-ears. And cat-tails. The universe seems to be an odder place than I thought now that I know people outside of anime wear cat ears and tails. The rockso abomination - and most furries - I can ignore as they seem to be night-mare figures out at the edge of consciousness. But cat-ears. I dunno.
