I want to thank you folks for confirming my long held decision never to watch Dragonball Z. My original reason for doing so was that it appeared to be mostly endless sequences of martial arts posturing paired with the flat-out ugliest art I've ever seen in an anime. It is nice to know that it annoyed so many other people as much as myself.

Yes, I'll second the never watch DBZ bit. ;) I tried watching it a couple times. They kept fighting this one guy episode after episode. I got bored after a while, tuned in a month later... and they were still fighting the same guy. That about did it for me. :P

And on the subject of the comic... Well, I guess Ian didn't blow himself to hell or anything after all, although admittedly, from a literary standpoint, it would have been rather anticlimatic if he'd just disappeared and never showed up again. :p

Anyone else ever read Jim Lee's Divine Right?

ES keeps reminding me of the story

The only good thing that Dragon Ball Z has ever wrought in this world is...

BUTTLORD!

those one winged angles can be quite acute

By my measure, they're rather obtuse...

The first bit isn't that bad. Then they caught up with the manga... At that point, you have four choices: Hiatus, non-canon filler, branch off to a different story, or try to have each episode cover the same amount of plot that the manga covers. DBZ tried the fourth option, which led to ten (or twenty)-minute glowing-and-grunting sessions. Later, they tried fillers instead-- I'm not sure exactly which arc was the filler arc, but I'm inclined to believe it was one of the sillier ones. Then there's the fact that the main villain of the first story arc could blow up a planet with his strongest attack, the main villain of the second story arc could blow up a planet with one finger, and subsequent villains were progressively stronger. Then add the revolving door of death (including the mass revival of entire planets on multiple occasions), and not only is the scope of the action too broad to conceptualize, but the consequences barely matter. So, needless to say, it sort of spiralled out of control after a while...

Not wings rather, lines of Goddess power. Ian/Anilis doesn't need wings to fly.

As regards DBZ: My daughter loved the show, when she was 13. Special effects do more to keep kids entertained than you can imagine. It's the flashing lights and swirling colors.

I sometimes think that humans are actually featherless crows.

My surname means "blackbird". Quite literally on the family crest there are 3 crows.

Do I win the prize? :-3

It amuses me to no end that some of the anime I've purchased has the seizure warning subtitled in english.

And thanks for the explination of why DBZ sucked. I never really understood why changing from one yellowish glow to a slightly different yellowish glow was considered enough material for a 30 min episode.

There is a story behind DBZ...
... and the story is that the autor/artist never wanted to make it.

That was the editor, the buiness people, and the readers/fan/DB-freack who push him to continue again and again and again the serie.
The autor started getting tired and losing interest when he was drawing the last part of DB.

That's because the original Dragonball series was supposed to be a modern take on the legend "Journey to the West". By the end of the series, he was at the end of the story-- and that was all he wanted to do in the first place.

Yep it was supposed to end with Goku's fight with Frieza (although that in itself wasn't the best storyline out there) but it made money so they pressured him into a series of continuing stories till people are shattering reality by yelling really, really loud and then you had GT which he wasn't even involved in so all up not the best show although I understand its actually fairly decent if you cut out all the hours and hours of them standing there going "But I have not used my full power yarrghhhhhh".

On the subject of names mine translates to protector of the defending army which always seemed a little odd to me (my parents just liked the sound of the names they picked didn't know what they meant).

No it was supposed to end with Dragonball.

The fight with Piccolo I believe.

That was just the first of many intended conclusions.

He means once they pressured him into making DBZ. Freiza saga was supposed to be the original end of DBZ. DBZ wasn't supposed to be made.

Dammitall, they mass-produce new episodes of crap like DBZ and cannot even finish the published stories for Twelve Kingdoms.

I want my own kirin, so I can feel superior to a being of immense power and beauty.

For those of you who did not get the reference. The One Winged Angle, is the battle theme of sephiroth. And if you don't know who sephiroth is? I must ask. Where in the name of fucking fuck-fuck have you ben!

Hey, it may have been utter drech but remember this, the author did it for the money. He wasn't chained to his drawing table with anything but yen, lots and lots of yen. He could have just said "No' at any time.

But, OTOH, he could have done a better job at the drech that he created.

Sufficiently large chunks of cash would get me to bite too
