Barghest: Hrm. I would guess that the blades don't physically exist and are created by the staff portion. Kind of a lightsaber thing. Given that, it's probably a reasonable assumption that it's turned off or down in this picture.

I was guessing that you could take any kind of blade and stick it in there where magic or some gravity warp would keep it there.
