It might be a bit early for this but it appears that Sarine is an Errant Hunter. So what caused her go from having a little Errant of her own to hunting them down and killing them? There are a few possibilites:

She is not an Errant Hunter but just a run of the mill bounty hunter.
Only some errants snap and go bad.
She has since realized that the purges were a good thing.

I am sure that there are a few others but if I were to post them all there would be nothing to discuss.

Hell, we haven't even seen any of the errants in action, so we don't know what is it they are capable of. Maybe, like Derren, they can transform into trolls and rape and cannibalize defenseless girls. This certainly wouldn't put the errants in a good light.

Derren can do that? It was kinda suggested in subtext, I guess...but if he can, then this comic just got a whole lot cooler. :D:D:D

Oh, and on a sidenote, "Armed Rebel nuns"? but...that's hardly porno at ALL!!! O_O


EDIT: Actually, now I look at it, Derren can't turn into a troll. :( Probably. Awwwww. :(:(:( He's probably just strong LIKE a troll. Or somethin'. But damn, a were-troll would rule. :D XD

EDIT2: It'd be kinda like Shrek. Kyaha. :D

Why is she killing errants?

1- it adds irony to the story... she wanted to have an errant for a daughter and now she's killing them

2- they smell bad *shrugs*

If errant means "any half elf" than sure, but if errant means "the half elves that go fucking crazy and kill people" than the statement would be incorrect.

Best to find out what they are all about first.

Yeah, I thought she implied in the first few pages that Errants were Half-Elf's who were screwed up from birth in one way or another. Either physical or mental, or both.

Well We just gotta wait and see for our selves... but for know we'll continue to speculate and pull Random idea's out of our nether regions...

One possibility is a straight-out racial holy war against the products of human/elf miscegination. I find this unlikely, since why would Sarine do the dirty with a human?

It is similarly doubtful that the war is between elves and humans, since that would imply there would be a lot less of either. (although the response to the bar scene may provide confirmation).

Sarine seems to have been going to kill Derren, but she DIDN'T know he was killing people.

Maybe the elves have to kill all the errants that leave The Family, like the Mafia. But this would again imply competition, with say, humans.

My hunch is that some half-elves just "go bad". Sounds like it's probably a genetic thing, since the flashback mentions "if she turns out all right in the first place". So maybe it's the sort of thing that it detected quickly, and the kids are left to wolves.

Another, cooler, yet more unlikely possibility, is that half-elves crack up after a few thousand years. They can't handle the stress of super long lives, and the human side gives them an "expiration date". And Sarine has to go and kill them when they expire.

I guess the biggest question for me is if the humans are active players in the war, and if so what side. That would explain a lot.

You are correct! That craking up is possibility. Refering to "tolkien elves" the errants cant handle all losses and misery in their life.
I think its racial thing why she is killing errants. She wants to keep elvish blood pure and ironical at the same time her child is(/was if she is dead now...) half blooded.

I have been doing some thing recently on this whole Errant killing thing and have come up with a hypothesis.
The Sarine that we see now is not the same Sarine from the prolouge but her daughter. She is an Errant and that is why she is hunting down other Errants and killing them. I believe that Errants are prone to *unusaul* behavior such as turning into troll like beasts and killing nuible young girls. Most time the Errant is unaware that this change is taking place but sometimes they do realize it. I believe that Sarine has realized that she can change in to something and that is who she is making off-hand comments to. Or more to the point it was her *bad* side that said "I'm sorry" to her *good* side and her *good* side that *Don't* to her *bad* side...

My own little thought. Maybe something happened to her child, maybe she went crazy. Or even killed the father? This would make Sarine hate Errants, or at least see what they do. Just another thought.

Another note: why her ears alone make people back off?

Here's a thought:

What if Derren is also Sarine's child? That would explain the hood, and the 'sorry'...or perhaps he's even her grandchild--which would make him a quarter-elf (and maybe eveyone hates quarter-elves. I know I do).

If he was, wouldn't she say "sorry" to him in his language?

Or maybe he can, but not if he's nearly decapitated in a matter of seconds.

Again you guys, the story is hinting towards that, but we still do not know if that is the same Sarine from the prologue.
