To me the character Meji is another branch of elves in Tales of Phantasia where elves who messed around with humans made outcasts.

Tales of Phantasia is a SNES game that was
made by NAMCO ( the company that made pac-man )very popular during it's time. It was so popular that it gain a sequel as well as
another shot it the sun on PSX with model
improvements, added cut sences, and an extra character. The sequel was known as Star Ocean on SNES where there was more voices, auto battle, and included a gameboy game too. Then they made the game based Anime and other Star Ocean games on PSX.

Wasn't the sequel to Tales of Phantasia named Tales of Destiny (which was an AWESOME game, greatest. battle system. ever.)

ToD's sequel was Tales of Eternia(JAP)/Tales of Destiny 2(USA)

They're working on a Tales of Destiny 2(JAP) for the PS2 right now.

Tales of Destiny was a Lower cop off Tales of Phantasia. you see the "Wolf Team"
the people who made Tales of Phantasia had left Namco and later on when they had the chance to create Star Ocean with a slightly diffrent battle theme dew to the fact that Namco kept on using there vs. like battle theme over and over in many of there later game titles. Seeing that it was Wolf Team
that created Tales of Phantasia in the first place any games created with the continuation of the story platforms will most definetly be a sequel meaning that even if Namco did release any more Vs. like games they wouldn't even come close to a real sequel unless it was done by Wolf team.
