I just taught a lesson on this to the juniour latin class, (Peter is peer tutoring that, and is unofficial president of the 'classics club')

Since we all love cut and past definitions, I'll flesh it out a little more...

Deus Ex Machina
Literaly, God(s) (from) out of the Machine.
It's latin, and a phrase that was later applied retrospectivly too greek theater. And yes, it's original use was to describe the narrator, playing the part of Zues or Jupiter. At the end of many greek plays, (and a few roman comedies) the narrator would solve any unresolved problems. The most recent example would be the foot of god in monty python, squashing things that were put in as jokes, and don't make any sense. Dues Ex Machina now has the connotation of a non sequitor divine intervention. In case any of you cared:
Deus (God, or Gods, because it is a fourth declension noun, and you can't tell the difference in the nomitive case)
Ex (Transitive verb meaning 'out of')
Machina (accusative noun, Machine, hell if I know what declension it is...)

It was also the name of a avatar briefly on the roleplaying forums of "The Napping Cats Dream", in which the Avatar was a giant computer machine.

Poe...great work...glad to see your drawing another fine comic. Though I have to admit I was pretty addicted to EN and was looking forward to seeing if Babylon was gonna go ninja on the Gov't agency that killed Bush.

But thats water under the bridge....though...I do miss Ralph.

Nitpick: It's only "Day-S Eks Mah-she-Na" if you're using the Vulgar Latin conventions of pronunciation. Pretentious scholars - and, presumably, magic-users - would use the High Latin conventions, which means it's "DAY-oos eks MAH-kee-nah".

well, i think that the real reason for the overtly gratuitous shot of Meji's undies was to prove one singular point that i know has been resting heavily on all of our minds (...mebby)

removing all those belts is not needed to get laid wi' her, FANTASTIC!!!!!!!1

and that she isn't THAT much of a ho.

wait, that was two, shit...

That's how I thought it was pronounced. I
was worried that I sounded like some kind of
retard when bringing it up, because almost
no one else seemed to know what it was.

The machina pronunciation reminds me of FFX.

ah well, hopefully, flashing white cotton is an integral part of magic, which we will hopefully see a lot of.

White cotton? She doesn't strike me as the type...

Anywho, that has got to be the best damn incantation I've ever read/heard/seen. Utterly hilarious. Poe, you should go into fiction writing (well, not until you finish Errant Story)

"And lo, the mage did cry to the heavens,
that they might aid her in her task, and her
plea was thus:

Wild Magic and Miracle Working,
Chaos Theory and Weird Science,
Acts of Gods and Freak Occurences,
At the point where Unbelieveable Coinidences
and Contrived Events converge,
I reach my hand into the Gaping Hole
that exists within the Plot of the Universe.
I send my prayers across Barrier of Logic,
calling forth the forces of pure Dumb Luck to aid my Quest.
Let the Improbable happen.

And lo, she did flasheth her undergarments,
and called upon the name of Deus Ex Machina,
and it was Good."
-The Book of Chaos, 7:42,l 6-24

Calling forth the forces of randomness is no small task, it takes careful lack of planning and preparation. I predict an equally random reciprocation. But if the panty theory holds true in casting spells then this one will hopefully be a success... correct?

Land sharks, she will summon hundreds of land sharks. Or something to advance the plot. I had every intention of writing something witty, I instead go with this.

Am I really the first one to comment on reading "Deu Sex Machina"?

Gilgamesh: Reduce the size of your avatar. It squishes the text of the thread too much.

Too bad this spell is way too long for combat or being ambushed.

"Deus Ex Machina!"

*Anvils crush the ninjas*

Huh... and here i thought Deus Ex Machina was some kinda term for Bondage...

no really... I always thought it was pronounced 'dee-us ex Masheena' so it was pointing to something scary yt female

thus which is why i was dissapointed when i played Deus Ex: here i was expecting Female bondage women and instead i got goverment cyborg

you learn something new everyday

How about:

"Deus Ex Machina!"

*Ninja realizes the spellcaster is his long lost brother. Ninja joins party.*

Methinks the Deus Ex Machina spell is the 9th level Wish spell of Poe's world.

I'd imagine it as a Wish spell, but even *more* random. "Chaotic Wish"... hmm, might add that in a new campaign.
