Just wondering, why is it that when Poe uses the word "happen" in the past tense in his comics he doesn't add the "ed" on the end? For instance, a character will ask something like "What happen?" instead of "What happened?" Is there some kind of statement or inside joke being made here? I recall the phrase "what happen?" being in that Zero Wing intro, but making a Zero Wing joke in this day and age would just be crass. So, could this just be a grammatical error?

*Laughs* I saw it, but I didn't want to be rude. And Poe occasionally does mess up, but I remember him making a news post back on EN that he'd kill the first grammar nazi who bitched about his, uh, grammar.

Speaking of grammar, what exactly is the past tense of "smite?" "Smut," perhaps?

Its because the fantasy infidels have failed to develop grammar!

It's "smote," I think...

And to return to the topic, this has happened before, and was, ah, discussed on the old board... Christ I sound English there...

I'm not sure, really... I still smile when someone uses some mangled AYB grammar, especially when they don't mean to or even know... I mean, if AYBABTU has an entry in The New Hacker's Dictionary, it's passed beyond mere meme...

Dammit Eronarn, if you start the whole All Your Bases thing again it's gonna get violent real quick...

I dont know WHY people think its smitten. its Smote.

smitten is when you've got a hopeless crush on someone, IIRC. its not the past tense of smite

Smitten is another way of saying that something adores something. Example:

"Bob became smitten with his cat. Bob went to prison."

Actually, it's both. And the word Smitten means to "affect strongly; seize" but only when used in the passive voice.

The past tense is Smote, the past participle is Smitten.

So now you know.

Either way, I'm pretty sure Bob still goes to prison. It's not nice to do those kinda things to your cat.

If Meji acheives demi-godhood (or goddess-hood or whatever. They were discussing that in a different topic), I bet there'll be a lot of smiting to do. Gods seem to smite quite a bit. I guess it's necessary to get some respect.

"God: I am granting you this wondrous vision so you may believe in me and preach my faith.

Worshipper: Wondrous visions are all well and good, but the god we have smites our arses if we displease him. So, sorry, better luck next time."

In bob's defense: Hey that cat enjoyed every single minute of it

if you want a real grammatical puzzle, try finding the plural of penis. it may not exist, but for some reason unbenownst (i love that word) to me, i always wanted to what it is, so far, peni seems to work well.

well, better than penisisis (...)
