I was killing time at work, doing a search for sites that contained the term "Errant Story", when I saw one where the guy said he liked it because it was a cross between a fantasy and a western. No doubt someone's brought it up before, but I somehow missed that. I mean, the entire series of strips with Sarine in the bar practically screams "western", but I was just thinking of it in terms of a standard fantasy town in the desert. Not to mention Jon and his gun. For anyone like me who didn't see it before, just say it to yourself- "fantasy-western". Damn if that doesn't sound sweet... I hope that really is Poe's plan. (And curse FF6 for making me think that technology in a fantasy world isn't out of place!)

FF6 rocks. It's all about the AutoCrossbow/Chainsaw combo. And, of course... BUM RUSH!

Dammit, it isn't; there's no good reason why magic and tech can co-exist if they're both being applied to solve problems. If magic and tech have to compete, you rapidly arrive to whichever is the best for a particular task, and if they're both being actively developed, one may supplant the other.

More interesting is when you start combining magic and tech together, applying engineering principles to magic devices, or magically enhancing tech machines.

... I really should get some stuff written for LC, the whole world it's in is based on the co-existance of magic and tech.

Nah, it's all about Terra's Morph ability. There's just something about naked pink ethereal chicks with 2X attack...

Seriously, though, everybody but me saw the western-fantasy thing didn't they?

Sounds like the Magitek armor from FF6. IIRC, it was basically a 'mech powered by magic. Which, come to think of it, sounds a lot like Escaflowne. Damn it! The deck was stacked against me realizing this wasn't a standard fantasy universe from the start. I mean, when FF8 has you running around in *sports cars*, how's a guy supposed to keep his fictional milieus separate? *grumble* *grumble*

one fine example of Golem-Mecha is presented in the comic Battle-Chasers.

and Kestenvarn, stop trying to steal, you could get re-initialized for such bad behavior!!!!!

Eh. I run a freeform campaign with three different types of 'magic': clerical magic, arcane sorcery, and a sort of twist on psionics called "aetheric science," which replaces wizardry as the "scolarly" magic in the game.

A magic/tech combination is rather convenient, especially in a science fiction game. I don't have the burden of explaining how lasers would be feasible weapons in my world. I just say that the power source draws upon a crystal cell that has to be recharged with mental energy. At least in my opinion, it's better than the Star Trek style pseudoscientific explanations.

On a smaller technological scale, a western fantasy has a lot of potential. As much as I hate Xenogears, a Billy Lee Black priest/gunslinger is a nifty character idea.

I'd have the priests enchant their bullets and take out those smug vampire assholes that think they are immune to bullets.

A rather unfortunate example, since Joe Madureira is out of work and he spends his waking hours playing FFX and sipping little somethings out of an illicit brown paper bag.

Is the brown paper bag illicit, or is he sipping an illicit substance out of a paper bag?

/nitpick

RE-initialized? What are you talking about?

I asked about it in an earlier thread. I doubt Poe will add them in Sarine's time period (kind of clashes with the theme), although it looks possible for Tsuiraku.

yeah i'm well aware that Battle Chasers is no more, and i'm sad to hear that about Joe. I really like his Graphic detail, it's almost as good as Poe's

baaah Kestenvarn, one can always come and say such things
