Ok, So you know in Star Trek how they talk about subpsace, as sort of a plane of reality under ours... and they use it to break the laws of physics... communicate over lightyears in real-time, ftl travel, etc...

Just how theoretical is this subspace? Is it acctually theorized to exist, or is it purely Science fiction?

it's star trek going "we need to explain things really fast!"

"Take that Subspace!"

I couldn't resist. But I also found out that if you Google Image Search "Stormy Waters" you find some unexpected results.

I understand that it's manely just a plot hole filler, but I also know that much of star trek's technobabble is at least slightly based on real scientific theory. So my question is does such a theory exist? This would also apply to hyper-space, and other catch-all sci-fi terms for layers of space that let you go really fast.

I mean, hey... if you can believe that going through a blackhole will teleport you via worm-holes to some other place in the universe... subspace doesn't sound so far-fetched

Subspace theory exists. In ST, the idea is that they massively reduce the weight of the ship, and compress the space in front of the ship and expand the space behind it. To lower the weight of the ship, they slightly push the ship out of "phase" and into "subspace" (it's quantum theory here, so it's like Greek, but the idea is that there are multiple layers of dimensions that are accessible thru technology). Once the compressed space starts to try and level out with the decompressed space, it pulls the ship forward slightly... and repeating this process thousands of times a second gives the tremendous speeds that ST seems to need. Technically, the ship doesn't move at all, the space around the ship is what actually moves.

Sounds messed up, I know, but that's the explanation. If I had a couple of books here at work that I no longer read, I could type out their actual explanation for it. I suggest for a great layman's view of subspace and FTL travel, you should pick up Dan Simmon's "Endymion."

Dude, this thread should totally be stickified, despite its total irrelevance (at this point) to ES. It's really unfair for newcomers to miss this awesomeness. I mean, how many other threads act as an introduction to multi-dimensional geometry, comment on an old Poe comic, and feature the first appearance of Krylex, all at the same time?

(And no, moving it to Unrelated is not a good idea. Why, you may ask? That I can tell you in one word: TRADITION!

It's funny to see Kest being mean to the person who would become an admin, later. Who can say what the future will bring?

I object to this thread being stickied on the grounds that anyone who deserves to find this thread and bask in its glory is perfectly capable of doing so without making it easy. I mean, I got to this after like a month of lurking, tops.

Not that it doesn't end up on the top of the stack for awhile every year or so anyway, what with all the thread-necro we do for it.

Perhaps this thread exists in it's own multi-dimensional space? Discuss!

I'm going to horribly rape this thread until text is squishing out with every thrust. Then I'll bitch-slap it a few times, light up, and bask in the afterglow while the thread goes out and earns me money on the street corner.

This is actually posted at a NASA site somewhere and is a viable theory. They just have no clue as to how to implement it.

Our universe has more than 21 dimensions, most of which curl back on themselves.

EDIT: Damn, that makes me sound like a physics geek :-?
