Maybe her mom just really really trusts her. When I lived at home, I did whatever I wanted to do pretty much. I would just tell my dad or step mom that I was going someplace and an apporiximate time of my return. They would usually just say "Ok, and be careful." They still really care about me, but their reaction was simular to Meji's mother.

living with a single parent, the eldest, or only child grows up a lot faster, and often has to be more self reliant and responsible...the parent sometimes comes to trust and reley on the child as an equal, and trusts their judgement al lot more them having had to reley on it from a much earlier age.

however, i doubt this is the case. my guess is that Meji's mom is a lush, she gets drunk all the time, and has a lot of sex with a lot of strangers, and whilst she may have some sort of affection towards her daughter, i highly doubt it's all that maternal...her mom doesn't want to be reminded of how old she is and that she should grow up a bit and look after her daughter.

also, i have justc analysed this WAAAAY too much for an adventure/comedy comic. the mom is likely not that important, and now we can get on with the demi-godding.

I don't think you can over-analyze this too much. Poe's always had a layer or two to his work; just look at Exploitation Now. Although I don't think he wants us to feel sorry for Meiji. That was a "well, that's life" shrug that she gives.

My guess is that Meji's mom is letting her learn the way she did: the hard way. Not out of neglect either, but out of trust.

IMO, the more you try to steer a child's life, the more you send them astray. That's why I left my father for good, because he was too controling of the kind of person I grew up into.

In "neglecting" her, Meji's mom is inadvertanly (or intentionaly*, depending on how much she realises it) teaching Meji self-reliance, the single most important thing to have in life.

* = To Poe: Hint Hint.
