The books were an amazing Science Fiction (Herbert hated them being called SciFi) series about politics, drugs, religion, and why you really shouldn't mix the lot of them. That said,

Yes, I am only just now reading Dune. Heck, I didn't read Ringworld or Armor until I was 17. Heck, I only read the first Wheel of Time book two months ago.

As for the rest of the Dune series, I've been told that everything sucks after the first book.

No, they just get weirder. But, they still rock.

Books one to three are really neat, after God Emperor of Dune shit starts getting messed up.

No kidding. It definetly got very confusing in there. Especially when you don't read the entire series together.

Anyone's thoughts on the prequel Dune books?
I thought they were OK, not the greatest but still a nice read.

They were based on original notes, so, story wise, it's neat to see how the whole thing started.

Writing wise........EH. The authers are good, but not Frank Herbert good.

They were cheap sci-fi. That is all.

If you want a far more decent, Frank Herbert approved (thought not without its flaws), prequel. Track down a copy of The Encyclopedia Of Dune. I really don't have time to chronicle how awesome it is, except to sayt that I have seen copies go for $200 on Ebay.

My High School library had a copy, I read it cover to cover, it was awesome.
