Wow, it seems Jon has uber x-ray anti-elf-disguise eyes.

Hey at least Sarine was honest...SHE'S not here to hurt him. Can't say much 'bout those other elves...

(and to be honest...that guy in the background a panel back looked like Jon's evil clone, Jeremy...)

So the guy in the back is Sarna, or an entire group just poofed into existance behind Sarine, or they walked in the tavern door, or what?

Or everyone is paranoid and jon was simply referring to future run ins with elves while meiji is with him.

Nah my qualified guess is he's not talking about future run ins, but more likely a group of elves behind Sarine or a lone Sarna there.

And yes, I am a certified guesser.

Here is my certificate, go away and bother someone else. >_>

That is quite the impressive certificate...

*swoons* I wish I had one too...

I go with the crazy-x-ray(or any other part of the wave thingies)-see-through-magic-eyes group here.

Or something.

Now... will Sarine just leave, or stick with "the main party"?

I stand firmly in the "Jon's bluffing" camp. Seems more likely, especially considering Sarine wanted to talk to Jon, Meji, and Ian secretly.

You know what I'm surprised hasn't come up yet? A comic plot pool. You take bets and give odds on plot developments and see who wins. If nobody than it goes on to the next comic... Fun for all!

In which case I give 2:1 odds that Sarine doesn't actually join the group, but follows them at a discreet distance and eventually saves their asses from something... Any takers?

Keep in mind that Poe has confirmed that magical ability runs in the blood in this world, guys. Sara Amraphael posesses magical abilities, Jon likely has a touch of power, too. That's probably why Jon was so quickly able to spot Ellis, and to realize that Ellis was in fact a talking cat, rather than continue to ignore that, wich is what Meji's Somebody Elses Problem field should have made him do. When he saw through it, Meji probably chalked it up to her concentration on the spell slipping, or to a particularly inquisitive and/or stubborn mind. This could also explain how Chris, the son of an Ensirgium Ninja Time Mage, would be able to see Ellis for what it really is, withought that situation being a plot hole. For the Mighty Poe does not make plot holes, and we will messily kill any who disagree...

At any rate, like the little girl with magic eyes spotting Sarna, Jon's largely unrealized magical abilities(I would bet good money that he unconsiously uses his powers to enhance his firearms skills) have cut through the illusion spell that would normally be masking Sarna, and probably 2-3 other rangers from view. Sarine would have been concentrating on Jon, probably subtly using her powers to wear down his will and make him more willing to tell her whatever the fuck she wants to know(and the fuck part could come in later, we already know she has a fetish for mortals). Because she is concentrating on one man, she would not notice what is happening in the room around her. By contrast, Jon is keeping an eye on the room, making sure nobody gets the drop on him, and thus would spot anybody wearing an Illusion spell.

I have a feeling that we are about to see another round in the immortal 'discussion' of Guns VRS Swords, with Jon supplying the guns and Sarna the sword.

Actually Chris the son of an ensirgium ninja time mage. (Or CtSoaENT for short) couldn't spot Meji when she inviseblized herself, maybe there is a difference between inviseblization and the Someone Elses Problem spell
but we don't know at this time.

Sure, because invisibility is a fairly high order spell. There's a hell of a lot more to get past, especially if you have no training. A sufficiently stubborn amature should theoretically be able to see through an invisibility spell, but not easily. An SEP works by showing the target what he wants to see, taking the normal inclanation to ignore anything that does not involve you and re-enforcing it. You don't even need magic powers to see through one, just stubornness. Ford Prefect proved that you don't even need to be particularly sane.

I'm not sure we're paranoid, or if there's actually elves there, but in either scenario, Jon comes out looking like a badass :D

I'm pretty sure that Sarine is the only elf in the vicinity, or at least the only one following Meji and Jon. I'd be asking the same questions Jon is in his position. Just the one elf is enough of a threat to concern me.

As for the SEP field, it works most of the time, but it's relatively easy to see through. Ford saw the bistro-ship because he was looking for one/was more than slightly insane. Arthur saw it because Ford pointed it out to him. Now, as for why the idiot suffering from Vertical Hair Syndrome saw Ellis, there are numerous explanations:

1) He had no idea that Meji used magic to take those guys out. Explosions sending people flying over rooftops and giant rocks falling from the sky to crush people were simply accepted by his feeble mind. Thus it's not entirely unlikely that he wouldn't see Ellis and simply accept a flying, talking, smartass cat. You don't have to be smarter than a wet bag of hammers to get around an SEP field.

2) It could be that he has some inborn magical ability, as has been said. Somehow he had just enough of it naturally that he saw through the SEP. Being untrained and generally clueless, the invisibility spell was totally beyond his ability to detect.

3) Meji stopped diverting power/attention to the SEP whilst smiting the unbelievers, thus letting everyone see Ellis for what he really was.

4) She didn't put the obfuscation spell on Ellis until after the incident in order to avoid attracting any more attention than she already had.

As for the guy in the back, that isn't Jon's twin brother. It's this guy: http://www.exploitationnow.com/babs2-4.html. Happy Kat sent him into an alternate feudal era via an ancient well filled with the bones of monsters in order to steal a sacred jewel that would enhance his demonic powers. Fortunately for the fabric of the universe, copyright lawyers sued his beanie ass and the guy was brought back to modern times in our dimension where he was promptly splattered across the landscape by some immortal chick with a knife fetish.

I don't think its likely that other elves are there. They're probably all in (IIRC) Isabel, which is where Sarine told Sarna to go.

SQUABBY!!!

meanwhile...I also agree, Sarine is relaxed because half the bar is on her side. Partially explaining why there wasn't a freakout when she showed her ears.

I don't know about that, Skjie. Mandi said Sarine should keep her hood up so's not to scare off any more customers...so there was, at least, a mild freak-out.

...I think I want there to be more elves hiding out. Just to see Jon (and Sarine!) in action.

Hmmm. If there are other elves, and Sarine didn't want them to be there, I wonder if she'd let them kill Jon, or protect Jon to meet her own ends?

Only if the other elves don't trust her. She led Sarna astray, what makes you think the other elves would be with her after that?

The big question underlying whether or not Jon has potential for magical powers is whether Jon and Sara are full brother and sister. It is possible that they have different fathers, and magic could come in through the father's line in Sara's case.

Personally, I'd be a little annoyed if Jon had magical powers. I'd prefer him to be the one non-magical guy trying to cope with a @#$%-storm of magic flying around him, using his brains and his guns to keep his head above water.
