Since it was a good suggestion, we now have a special thread/contest for the typo listing folks.

Here are the rules:

1) First post wins, even if they miss an error. There's only allowed to be one post per update, and only one page per post.

2) List errors by page, panel, speech bubble. For example:

20060703, Panel One, Meji's First Speech Bubble: "where ever town" should be "wherever this town"

3) List errors in order (from the top of the page to the bottom, and from left to right).

4) The competition allows for only a single post per comic page. If you see five errors on a page, but somebody already posted a single one, do not post in the forum anymore. Just go here and enter the typos that were missing.

Whoever gets the most posts here by the time we get to the editing process for the next book will receive a free, autographed copy of the book, and a bonus prize. The next two runners up will also receive free copies of the book. ONLY FORUM POSTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AS VALID ENTRIES, SO PLEASE DO NOT E-MAIL YOUR ENTRY!

Good Luck!

Hi Imp-chan,
should this become a "sticky" thread? I also recommend setting up a Wiki page for the typos. The community might save you the work of collecting them. This sounds just like the kind of thing Wikis are good for :-)

These here are not part of the contest, since they don't refer to a web site update. They are in the printed Errant Story Vol 1. I thought I'd rather post them here than in the thread where you've asked me for them.
I'm not a native english speaker, so some of the stuff may be intentional and I just didn't get it :oops:

20021108, Panel 1, guy's big bubble: "everyday" -> "every day"
20021108, Panel 2, Sarine's last bubble: "such weird concept" -> "such a weird concept"
20021213, Panel 1, Meji's last bubble: "most everybody else" -> "almost everybody else" (or slang? :oops:)
20021216, Panel 2, Meji's first bubble: "strong enough take out" -> "strong enough to take out"
20021218, Panel 1, teacher's big bubble: "want you to stand" -> "want you to stand up" :oops:?
20021225, Panel 3, teacher's third bubble: "this is very dangerous world" -> "this is a very dangerous world"
20021225, Panel 4, teacher's second bubble: "accomplish little" -> "accomplish this little"
20021230, Panel 3, Meji's third bubble: "across barrier" -> "across the barrier"
20030103, Panel 6, last bubble: "away from from" -> "away from"
20030108, Panel 2, Meji's second bubble: "but what there is good chance of this being is some sort of..." -> add a colon to "chance of:"? otherwise, I don't know how it should be phrased :-( or is it slang? :oops:
20030108, Panel 6, Ellis' second bubble: "stayed long here enough" -> "stayed here long enough"
20030110, Panel 1, Ellis' second bubble: "not suppose to" -> "not supposed to"
20030120, Panel 2, Meji's last bubble: "and so help you if they" -> :confused: :oops:
20030305, Panel 6, Chris' first bubble: "despoiled" -> "despoil" or "despoiling", to match Panel 4
20030310, Panel 2, Meji's second bubble: "is held too..." -> "is held to..."
20030310, Panel 3, Meji's second bubble: "is suppose to" -> "is supposed to"
20030319, Panel 6, Jon's last bubble: "what ever happen to" -> "whatever happened to" (slang? :oops:)
20030328, Panel 3, Jon's second bubble: "wouldn't of had to" -> "wouldn't have had to"
20030404, Panel 3, Ellis' second bubble: "what happen to" -> "what happened to"
20030428, Panel 5, Meji's first bubble: "I must have not have actually heard" -> "I must not have actually heard"
20030430, Panel 1, Meji's second bubble: "what happen to" -> "what happened to"
20030430, Panel 4, Ellis' bubble: "is suppose to" -> "is supposed to"
20030502, Panel 2, guard's second/left bubble: "is suppose to" -> "is supposed to"
20030502, Panel 4, Ian's bubble: "surly" -> "surely"
20030502, Panel 5, Ian's second bubble: "tell good, sir" -> "tell, good sir"
20030507, Panel 3, Ellis' bubble "took a 'introduction...'" -> "took an 'introduction...'"
20030512, Panel 4, Jon's first bubble: "suppose to fight" -> "supposed to fight"
20030514, Panel 2, boss' second bubble: "quite awhile" -> "quite a while"

20030723, Panel 1, Ian's second bubble: "they've had priest come" -> "they've had a priest come" or "they've had priests come"
20030814, Panel 1, Jon's third bubble: "err, thanking" -> "err, thank"
20030827, Panel 2, Meji's third bubble: "sent out shock wave" -> "sent out a shock wave" or "sent out shock waves"
20030829, Panel 3, Meji's second bubble: "what I read it these books" -> "what I read in these books"
20030829, Panel 4, Ian's last bubble: "but then something happen" -> "but then something happened"
20030905, Panel 1, Ian's second bubble: "in anyway" -> "in any way"

Volume 2 to follow when I've had the time to read it again.

Editing of Volume One was before my time I'm afraid. You'd have to talk to the person responsible for editing and publishing back then... I don't think they thought it mattered if there were errors.

Volume Two is very much my responsibility, though, and I did try to be pretty thorough. I'd be definitely interested in where I missed there.

Vol. 2.

I'm using the paperback page numbering; was there even a hardback edition of this?

14 (3) - "with out" -> "without"
14 (4) - "hearsay" -> "heresy"
19 (1) - "penniless and probably" -> "penniless, and probably"
19 (3) - "odd was" -> "odd. was"
21 (2) - "is actually warning" -> "is actually a warning"
24 (1) - "side so" -> "side, so"
28 (4) - "foreigner, who" -> "foreigner who"
35 (5) - "under funded" -> "under-funded"
40 (1) - missing '<' in the first balloon

Got bored, stopped when we ran into Mandy.

Hmm... I think I may have discovered the problem. When we first sent the edited and corrected files to the printer, there was a margins problem. I had Poe correct the margins in every file and resend... he may have used the unedited files, and we were just in such a hurry to get them to the printer (the books were supposed to be in our hands in time to send for Christmas) that I didn't see that he did.

Which completely sucks, because I specifically remember fixing the hearsay one.

Quite annoying :cry: If it's a consolation to you, I've noticed that some typos were corrected. I even found one occasion where a missing word was inserted in the wrong place :-)

Here's my list for volume 2. For the "Previously, In Errant Story Volume One" part I've just numbered the pages from 1 to 5.

piESvo-1, Panel 3, Meji's second bubble: "eleven gods" -> "elven gods"
piESvo-3, Panel 1, Jon's second bubble: "likes to shoot people, never shave, and f--- whores" -> "likes to shoot people, never shaves, and f---s whores"
piESvo-3, Panel 1, Jon's fourth bubble: "certainty" -> "certainly"
piESvo-3, Panel 2, Ian's bubble: "half elf girls" -> "half elf girl" (slang? :oops:)
piESvo-3, Panel 3, Meji's second bubble: "you" -> "your"

2003-10-15, Panel 4, Meji's second bubble: "any these" -> "any of these"
2003-10-15, Panel 5, Meji's bubble: "there be might" -> "there might be"
2003-10-31, Panel 3, Meji's third bubble: "happenned" -> "happened"
2003-11-26, Panel 3, guy's second panel: "relatively, safely" -> "relatively safely"
2004-01-26, Panel 1, Sarine's second bubble: "certainty" -> "certainly"
2004-02-18, Panel 6, Sarna's second bubble: "as long they stay" -> "as long as they stay"
2004-03-05, Panel 1, monk's bubble: "happen" -> "happened"
2004-03-08, Panel 4, Anita's second bubble: "able step in" -> "able to step in"

2004-04-02, Panel 3, Mandi's second bubble: "after awhile" -> "after a while"
2004-04-02, Panel 5, Jon's bubble: "up stairs" -> "upstairs"
2004-04-12, Panel 2, Jon's second bubble: "being having" -> "be having" (slang? :oops:)

2004-05-05, Panel 3, Jon's fourth bubble: "most everything" -> "almost everything" (slang? :oops:)
2004-05-16, Panel 3, Sarine's second bubble:" out all" -> "out of all"
2004-05-19, Panel 4, Jon's bubble: "happen" -> "happened"
2004-06-09, Panel 2, Sarine's bubble: "most anything" -> "almost anything"
2004-06-23, Panel 2, Jon's first bubble: "well thank, Luminosita" -> "well, thank Luminosita"

2004-10-13, Panel 1, Sarine's ninth bubble: "started tospread" -> "started to spread"
2004-10-29, Panel 1, second box: "sigma" -> "stigma"
2004-11-22, Panel 2, sixth box: "what for" -> "for what"
2004-12-06, Panel 4, Sarine's first bubble: "relatively still intact" -> "still relatively intact"

There were some more "awhile" and "some where" which I didn't list because they felt more intentional to me. Also the occasional odd comma, but I'm not firm with punctuation rules myself :-)
Neither of those had a significant impact on my reading flow.

The hardcover books were a decision made by our previous publisher. Poe never really liked them much, so when we changed over to self-publishing we decided not to make any more of them. The current hardcovers of ES Vol. 1 and EN Vol. 1 are in fact limited edition... there will never be any more of them, and there were only around 500 copies ever produced.

It should be noted that when we do eventually publish Exploitation Now Volume Two in paperback the first edition of it will not be edited, and will contain all the original errors depicted on the website versions. We wanted it to match the first volume, and be a preservation of the original feel of the comic. However, the Exploitation Now: Done With It All book will be fully edited before it goes to print, since it's supposed to be a sort of special edition.

20060717, Last Panel, Second Bubble: "A regiment of soldiers routed out a fairly large troll settlements to the south a month ago." should be changed according to whether the plot requires there to be more than one troll settlement, about which I have no information.

20060717, Last Panel, Last Bubble: "I'd imagine we look like a pretty enticing spot for a group of angry, homeless trolls refugees" should be changed to either remove the S from the end of trolls or remove the word refugees.

Edit: Fix a typo I introduced myself and to attempt to get closer to Impy's format.

20060721 Panel 1. Sara came to this village by way of a Veracian ("run" may not be necessary) orphanage in Farrel. Her father was murdered some years earlier. (no caps necessary)
Panel 2. "And" is unnecessary. Starting out with the word Traditionally, has a nicer sound as well.

Side note:
How can one be raised to a full monk?

One could be raised to the level of full monk, assuming that this is some sort of highly traditionalized class system comprable to that of a belt colors in Karate or rank in the catholic church.

Perhaps a mention of the levels of monk-ness would be helpful?

looking over Gambit's suggestions, i agree with the phrasing. however, they do not physically 'fit' as well in that space allotted by the speech bubbles and font size. so some word choices by Poe may have been made under that constraint.

a type IS a typo, however. :P

I agree that space is an important consideration that I obliquely overlooked. Thanks for pointing that out. I understand that phrasing may need to be compressed for a speech bubble to be effective. This does not however mean that a careful consideration of what a character is saying and what a character may be Saying is out of place. The truth is, all the "typo's" we've seen so far could be easily explained as being a part of the stylistic "webcomic" world language that Poe is practicing. To judge this language by our "non-webcomic" standards would be like comparing apples and oysters.

20060724, Panel Two, Ellis' Second Speech Bubble: "...that those things are in anyway, shape..." It should be: "...that those things are in any way, shape..." - needs a space between any and way

20060724, Panel Three, Jon's First Speech Bubble: "never ending" should be "never-ending"

This is not a thread to discuss how the comic might be differently written in areas, that's what the regular threads are for. Nor is it a committee to determine how well someone did at claiming their post for any given page, or if they might have missed something (that could be taken up anywhere else). It's a contest of observational skill, and also my lazy way of keeping the typos being pointed out from being drowned in conversation so that I can refer back here later. Therefore, please keep posts limited to the areas defined in the first post.

20060728, Panel One, Anne's Speech Bubble: "A piece of advice though first, Jon?" - try "A piece of advice first, though, Jon?" as it's being used as an intensive

20060728, Panel Two, Anne's Speech Bubble: "And something's up 'round here and..." - remove the "And" at the beginning of the setence as it gives a very awkward feel to it with two 'ands' so close together

20060728, Panel Four, Ellis' Second Speech Bubble: "Knit a nice warm fuzzy scarf then choke them..." - "Knit a nice, warm, fuzzy scarf and then choke them..."

Just a question to clarify things...even if the first post 'wins,' but they miss errors on a page, can we still submit errors for the same page as non-contest 'entries,' but just to help you out in general for when you reformat the text later? The whole point of this is to make the comic better, not win things, right? ;)

Wandering by lone sea-breakers, / And sitting by desolate streams; /
World-losers and world-forsakers, / On whom the pale moon gleams: / Yet
we are the movers and shakers / Of the world for ever, it seems.
(First stanza of Arthur O'Shaughnessy's piece, "Ode")
