Armor or no, I'd hate to see Sarine Leave behind the trademark Cloak and hood.

here's my question- since when does Sarine wear lipstick?

It's a variant art style Poe is using. Her skin isn't usually stark white, either. I don't know what the look is called, or whether it is Japanese or Western or both, but you can check out a couple of classic Robert Palmer videos to see it done with live women.

Hmmm . . .

You could tell she liked her whiskey and her men strong, smooth, and expensive. Her hair was red and unbound, her skin as fresh and pale as new milk, her eyes had that look of a thousand years of sorrow you get from seeing too much of the world and too much history. The pair of crystal-hilted swords she wore swung with her hips. Both of them had a motion that said they were the most dangerous things in the room . . ."

Veddy, veddy, nice, that. When's the rest of the book coming out?

After my current project (looking for an agent right now).

Yes, we'll call it "Wolf Point Condo," an urban fantasy, with Sarine Ranger teamed up with VI Warshawsky to solve a baffling, yet sensitive, Chicago murder mystery.

If nothing else, if the novel sells, I can commission Poe to do a poster of Sarine at a downtown cocktail party. Complete with ears and fancy dress daggers.

No way that's a hood, and there's no way that's (practical) armor. That much leather in a single piece would be incredibly restricting in a fight.

Also am I the only one who think that pose looks strange? Maybe if the hands were in the picture it'd look a little better.

Is that a joke? Because if not, I think there might be some IP/© issues there.

Note: there actually is a spot on the edge of the Loop in Chicago called "Wolf Point." The name refers to where the two branches of the Chicago River meet and it dates back about two hundred years. Now it's part of Yuppie heaven on the near west side.

I win at verb tenses, goddamnit. The way I read it, it sounded like something you were already doing. M'bad.

This is what has surprised me as well, since it was Sarine that was going on about how if a person is running around with an illusion spell on they stand out like a bloodstain on snow to any other mages in the vicinity. Need more Friday comic...

The only true statement is the one about my looking for an agent for a sword and sorcery novel. I've got a thirty-thousand word climax to script out . Thank gawd it isn't a porn novel.

I've been considering writing a porn novel with some friends of mine... not with the intent to publish, but with the intent to see how far we can push the envelope of horrible adjective-ridden slosh without rendering the end product unreadable. I think I pulled editor duty... my job would be to see that the sentences still make sense even with way too much fluff.

Also, that's a hood on Sarine's shiny new coat. I remember arguing with Poe about button placement for it.

I believe you have greatly misjudged your potensial audience.

You'd be surprised...

*looks at my Grandmother's novel... which actually was published*

*shudders*

No, I wouldn't be surprised. I've read crap so badly written I literally threw the book in frustration. It never ceases to amaze me how much garbage gets published and then apparently does really well.

*cough*Romance novels*cough*

I must admit that most genres have their guilty parties, actually. Not to mention the books that just get overhyped by the mass media.

As I told the wife yesterday, I was reading Charles De Lint and feeling hopelessly inferior. Then I read Mercedes Lackey and it cheered me up considerably. The only thing of hers I can't match is her writing speed.

It would be nice if Mercedes Lackey's heroes were somewhat less... shiny.

I mean, she does TRY to make them tarnished, but it's all superficial surface tarnish instead of real life soul deep uncertainty of the proper course tarnish. None of her good guys are anything but good... they stay bright and true with sickening predictability. They'd be far better written if they made deep, regrettable, irrevocable mistakes once in a while.

I spent the whole time reading Serpents Shadow waiting for the heroine to put the magical smack-down on someone and kick at least little ass. Preferably, everyone, including most of the "good guys"... who are each guilty of around 26 individual charges of being criminally uninteresting.

I closed the back cover incredibly disappointed.

I used to really love her work... up until the time I learned to be cynical. It was all downhill from there. Back when I still thought people COULD be that good and shiny, and wanted to be just like them, her books were fine. Now that I know better, they've lost much of their charm, though I still buy and read them.

Indeed. A proper man is gnarled and mangled like a bonsai tree. Every part distorted beyond recognition, remaining standing only by the virtue of a counteracting deformity or twenty. Such is the source of all lasting interest and beauty.

The same holds true for a world.
