Points for Sarine.

Of course, Jon is liable to be already squeezing the trigger.

Also, this means those Ensigerum have a lot of self-control. I don't think I could listen to Sarine and Jon going on like that without an urge to jump the gun.

Yelling like that was probably not the best idea. Couldn't she just, you know, walk (crawl?) over and tap him?

Hopefully Sarine can use her magical elven-fu to keep the ninja ass-goblins from hearing her shouting at the top of her lungs.

So, Jon, who's got every reason to expect this guy to have a monk covering him, doesn't spot the monk, even through a scope. Sarine, who's got no reason to expect anything suspicious, makes the pick. Even though she's got no reason to care about whether the target has a sword guarding him, since she doesn't know about the monk-gewehr war?

That seemed like a magical sense to me.

It's because one of the monks is carrying a Durus Flamma, which elves can sense.

When you're looking through a scope, you don't have a very wide field of vision.

Durus Flamma, or Lancea? The Lancea is the Ensigerum's preferred weapon, and it's not clear that elves can sense that (although certainly possible).

More likely this is just Sarine having remarkable powers of observation; after all, she is a Superior Being. That, and the need to drive the plot forward in a particular direction, which does tend to heighten one's powers of observation...

Another thing to keep in mind is that Jon might have seen the thing, but have no clue what it is. For all he knows, that could be some odd bit of clerical paraphernalia he's never seen before.

I mean, you see clerical types carrying all sorts of weird staves and stuff around all the time. He's got no reason to suspect this particular cleric is a monk in disguise from it.

Also, I'm guessing Sarine is using a "silence buuble" spell or something like that to keep their conversation private.

Poe made a post or something about this which I'm sure someone can link to, but from what I remember a Lancea blade is just one type of those vibrating crystal weapons (so it the Duras Flamma IIRC, rather than being the category), just like a sword and a halberd are similar, but not the same.

A lancea is a type of Duras Flamma.

Well, at least I was half right, I couldn't remember if a Duras Flamma was the broad category or just 'one of the others'.

*bookmarks Wiki for future reference*

If you an elf can hear (or otherwise detect) an active Durus Flamma blade from across a cathedral - doesn't that make them somewhat impractical for ambushes from rooftops? Maybe it's only audible at the moment it's being activated?

Bah... nvrmind. I'm sure the Catgirl's are dying as I think about it.

Sarine looked down and saw it.

Its not about detection. It is about eyesight.

Not to mention Jon is probably somewhat distracted by both the elf nattering in the background and the thoughts its provoking in him. The question is does he fire or doesn't he? Also I'd tend to agree with the statement that even if he did spot the staff there's a very good chance he wouldn't realize what it was like Sarin did, you'll notice she even had a moments hesitation to wonder if its what she thought. Now to wait for monday to see if Jon fires or not.
