New theory:

This isn't Sarine. Go back and look at Misa, the resemblance is pretty strong. And Misa had access to Sarine's swords, and could have had duplicates made.

Also, no armor, reliance fully on Elven arrogance and magic.. this isn't like Sarine at all. She knows better.

Armor's useless against Durus Flamma blades. Certainly her old armor was, anyway. That's why she said she was discarding it, and probably not getting any new armor to replace it.

I'm still betting on a victory for the heroes, because I choose to live in denial and forget about the ending to Exploitation Now. Thus, I can still believe Poe wouldn't ruthlessly kill off one of his main characters.

But she didn't know she was walking into a time-ninja trap, so wouldn't she still have her armor on, knowing what humans are like?

I don't think this is her, it's too much unlike her to be this cocky. If nothing else, her fight with Crazy Elf Guard Guy should have shown her exactly how much she should not be taking her skills for granted.

Misa also expressed a desire to be a ranger, was told pretty much all of what Sarine's been up to, and has not been around humans at all, and so wouldn't have any concept of relative skills.

I don't think Jon switched his gun out. Going back it looks like he's been using only one gun. That being said, he's fired five shots. You feelin' lucky, punk? Well, do ya?

Looking again, and considering her bum leg, it appears an earlier comment is right; she spellcasts to her left and attacks (clockwise) to her right. Warrel must have walked around behind her back to the other side (walking in front of her would have put him in her sword's path), noticed her sword about to be where he now was, turned around and walked over behind her again, and attacked.

I'm still not entirely sure what happened in Panel 5 on Monday, though. I mean, yeah, leg hit, but... what exactly are we looking at in that panel? What's that boomerang-shaped thing?

Here is what you are looking at in that panel, from upper left to lower right:
-- Sarine's left side, at belt level.
-- Sarine's left arm.
-- Sarine's left hip. Note the hilt of the short sword sticking up.
-- Sarine's left thigh. Poe's cuts are never as deep as they seem to be on first view. Dramatic license.
-- Sarine's left knee, padded. The black shadows to the left are her coat tails, not her right leg. The point of Warrel's spear is down and to the left of the kneepad.

Last, Desperate Overanalysis

Monday Panels

(1) Sarine in a guard position, facing Warrel. Her feet are apart. She had both hands on her sword previously, but now is holding it with her left hand, low and in front of her right thigh. Her left side is less obstructed for Warrel's spear, if he "freezes" her using time-fugue. She has some sort of magical haze floating. Sarine has turned her torso to the right and her right hand is forming a spell behind the partial screen of her face and left shoulder.

(2) Warrel charges, spear point held up above his right shoulder, his right hand on the forward (pointed) end of his grip.

(3) Warrel time-fugues. I believe he has brought the spear point down at this point.

(4) Warrel cuts Sarine's left thigh from time-stop.

(5) Warrel is past Sarine. It appears that he now has his left hand forward on the spear. This means he dropped the point by letting go with his left hand, rotating the spear point-down with his right, and then re-gripping with his left hand for the slice attack. He could have any amount of lethal or maiming damage to Sarine he cared to. He chose to hold the spear well off her left side and push the tip of it through the meat of her left thigh. If he'd cut through the bone, Sarine would have hit the floor.

(6) Sarine sags down as her left leg looses strength. She is turning to her left to face Warrel, her left arm swung out behind her for balance--you can see a piece of it under Warrel's speech bubble. Her sword must be in her right hand, off-panel, so she switched hands as she tried to regain her balance. I assume that she did not keep the spell focus from the first panel, or Warrel would have attacked her without pausing to chat. We cannot see Sarine's right leg, but it would have to be folded and under her center of mass to make her next maneuver possible. Note: the side of Warrel's chest is visible and is scarred but healed shut. Pretty good healing magic, at that. He certainly isn't favoring it at any point.

(7) Warrel gloats, while Sarine is flabbergasted. Warrel appears to be about four feet away from Sarine.

Wednesday

(1) It took me a while to sort this one out. Sarine has thrown her left hand up in Warrel's face and triggered a flash spell. The left side of her body is below the flash, her left ear to the left of the flash. She is both turning and leaning away from the flash with her right knee brought up under her body for a jump move. Sarine is avoiding the obvious maneuver, which would be to stab at Warrel. It looks is though she is both trying to blind him and attempting a feint, making it look like she is jumping away.

(2) For Sarine to do this move at all, she had to be using both legs. Probably hurt like hell. It looks like she has done a hop and complete spin around to her right, unfolding into a fencing lunge. Since she looses sight of Warrel when she does this, it makes sense for her to sweep the area with her duras flama. If Warrel is moving blind from the flash, he could easily fall in the arc of her swing. If he is extraordinarily fast and not blinded, all Sarine can do is cover a large arc with her sword and hope he makes a mistake. Otherwise, the maneuver is too slow to do any good. As it happens, nothng Sarine does matters. Warrel reacts instantly to Sarine's spell, time-stopping and moving around to be behind her when she comes out of her spin. He is not as bad at this dueling as some people have suggested.

(3) Warrel does the same precision slice from down to up as he did on his first attack. He could have killed her any number of ways, but did not. Again, if Poe's wounds were as bad as they are dramatized on first view, Sarine should be dead or paralyzed and mortally wounded. The spine is just below the skin on someone as thin as she is.

Second panel is sarine cutting infront of herself, and sweeping the hand holding the spell back (still spell light there. I think.) to cast behind : warrel timenijaed clockwise around her and sliced her up, Assuming the spell isn't just "flash of light" warrel may have walked into whatever it actually was. As plans go, it looks a lot like a "Two widows" strategy, and that spell better be something that takes the timeninja down.

My guess is that it was basically "Supreme Dispell" and he is about to have his gut rupture all over the place again and loose the ability to timeninja making this a Cripple versus Cripple fight.
And yes, he is far too much of a showoff to live.

is it assumed that all "elven" blades act the same? it could be that while if it did go across her spine it did nothing more than cut the skin and go across it, the spinal cord is within the spinal column itself.

Interesting theory about Mischa there although I doubt it. Now I'm waiting for the next comic to see what happens next. Cracks whip "Work my slaves we need mountains of gold to entice the wild Poe into posting quicker."

Now since we're doing desperate overanlysis.

Round 1: Sarah casts spell.
Round 2: Warren strikes Sarines back.
Round 3: Contingent spell goes off sending thousands of volts/fireball/death magic into Warren
Round 4: Sarine heals herself
Round 5: Sarah starst to worry.

It's true that we have no real idea what the pretty lights in Sarine's hand are intended to do. Fight could go almost any way from here still, but on current count, it's Warrel 2, Sarine 0.

hi hi

Where did Sarine go before when she was nowhere do be found? I'm betting she's still up on the platform and is using illusion magic. With a Durus Flamma blade, how would he know he's not cutting through thin air?

You know, even if you were actually giving us a mountain of gold (which we'd be happy to accept, btw), I'm still not sure he'd be able to post quicker without hiring a lot of help... which is terribly difficult to find for this sort of specialized work, because literally the help has to be in tune with Poe... since his brain is where this whole world happens to be stored.

Right now, Poe is effectively churning out a high-quality page every two days, from start to finish. That's general storyboarding, paneling, pencils, inks, scanning and lineart cleanup, shading, final scripting, and lettering. He's doing this alone, without so much as an assisstant to type up scripts for him. On top of that, he's having to rework scenes from general concepts that fit his basic script into specific visuals and dialogue... and he's doing it at a pace that's effectively improvisation. It doesn't come easily, and it certainly doesn't always come quickly.

In the normal course of writing, areas that are in need of work can be retouched and revisited in order to make later scenes work, or when writer's block strikes they can be skipped completely while the author works on something later in the story. For a webcomic, that's just not the case. It's like writing a novel but stopping every paragraph to show it to everyone reading, all with the pressure of KNOWING that once you've shown that paragraph you can't really go back and change it.

On top of the pressure to get it right and do it now, there's also the severe financial stress. An author usually gets a completion bonus, or at least an advance against their future royalties. They also don't have to risk their own income printing the books. They have a larger market, and get the financial resources of their publishing house at their back to help with promotion. A webcomic gets three general sources of income, if they're lucky: donations, merchandise, and advertising. Donations require heavy investments of time and effort creating the donation gifts, merchandise requires not only the investment of creation but the investment of capital, and advertising requires either a lot of time to build up a reputation for a quality service or the willingness to basically whore one's audience and one's work to advertisers who only care about numbers. Needless to say, webcomicry isn't a terribly secure profession, even within the field of the not-terribly-secure profession of authoring.

With all of this stress, it's no wonder how many artists and authors burn out before they can tell their story. It's not even surprising how many mistakes one finds in webcomics... the production of a daily comic astounds me, because the pace is just frenetic for even three times a week. The result of course is that the story suffers, the art suffers, the artist suffers, and the audience alternates between impatience and boredom. Honestly, I think Errant Story would be a better finished work (and would actually be finished faster) if Poe weren't concerned with a weekly update schedule at all, and instead were writing for Errant Story as the graphic novel series that it so clearly is written to be. For this sort of involved fantasy world... a webcomic is the LAST format I'd ever advise.

As for all the people going with "she's using her illusion trick," didn't the only time we see her use a dummy image of herself, it disappeared upon being touched by somebody, and never seemed to move? The other instances of illusion magic have all been applied on the person casting the illusion, to make them appear different, not projected somewhere else. Do we know if it's even possible?

But, regardless, we thank you and thank Poe for putting it in this format for us to enjoy and obsess over, and I do believe you are truly wonderful people for doing it.

The internet is an amazing place that is both full of despicable shit and truly amazing works of human achievement. Very few people actually manage to make any sort of profit out of it (when I say few people, I mean this relative to the amount of amazing things there are, and I do not include corporations in my assessment of people). But, despite all of the things that can be found on the internet, Errant Story is one of the few sites I ever actively check (there are fewer than 10 websites that I visit on a monthly basis), and that is because of the quality of its art and the strength of its plot. It is wonderfully written and drawn, with amounts of humor, drama, and plain dickassery that form a blend unique to Poe's style, and we're blessed that you allow us to view his work in such a medium.

I mean it when I say, in all honesty, thank you.

Obviously that is Ellis transformed into a Sarine doppelganger, which is why she is getting her ass kicked.
