Okay let's suppose there is a chance that tomorrow the entire internets may die (series of tubes becomes irreparably clogged). In that event I would like to be able to go back and read Errant Story, up to the latest one.

Anyone have any ideas how to save every comic strip without going through and doing them individually? Even better does anyone already have a zip file of the whole thing?

I have all of them, sadly I don't have enough space to upload them to.
In a crisis I could always Zip, Torrent and seed them, but ONLY if the site was down for a long time(in which case I'm pretty certain that the forums would also die).
But I wouldn't just do it out of the blue because Poe and Impy rely on the Ad-Revenue etc. Also if I can go through every Little Gamers and Misfile strip and save and name them one-by-one I think you can.

I started saving them all to my computer, but quit about halfway through. I figured I'd be better off just getting ES in dead tree format.

Whyever would the internet become mysteriously and irreparably clogged?
Moreso... why tomorrow, of all days? It doesn't seem significant.

It's called the "Law of What Happened Tomorrow". This law states, "If something is going to happen, however wonderful or dire, it will happen tomorrow, if it happens, which is a maybe, but more of a 'it could happen' kind of maybe than a 'that kind of stuff never happens, but this time, it just might' kind of maybe. If it's going to happen, which it may possibly, some people believe, then it, whatever it is, is going to happen tomorrow."

So, like a million teenage boys unfulfilled sexual desires, "it" could happen tomorrow.

Yay for psuedoscience laws!

My favorite is murphy's law, which is what's really being considered here. It's just that which is being considered is being considered inside the "Law of What Happened Tomorrow."

I think it was more Impy(in Unrelated) mentioning that the Server actually belongs to Kry-Kry and that because he's in the Navy now she was worried that the company wasn't taking her money and might take down the whole forum/website/store sometime in the near future(something which has since been fixed thankfully).

I have the entirety of Errant Story, plus most of the filler and related misc. artwork for it that I've come across, saved to my hard drive. I save each new comic as it comes out. Actually, I've got a lot of comics saved that way. My comics folder is just over two gigabytes in around 25,000 files at the moment, which translates to the entirety of numerous comics and random non-story artwork for some of them. If you want any of them, I'm not that hard to find online and could send things to you over AIM or whatever.

That said, not only do I lack the space to host these things, I wouldn't host them or give them out on any greater scale than an individual basis because, well, if people want to read the comic they should really just go to the site. I mostly use my archive to look through the archives or whatever when I want to but don't have my laptop somewhere with internet. Also, it's far easier to navigate than the online archive, at least in my opinion, and it lacks load times, so if I want to reference or look through something quickly it's the way to go.

Just so we're clear...

Company policy is, of course, that downloading the comics to your computer is illegal and wrong and is something you should never ever do to anyone ever because it has the potential to rob us (or them) of revenue. Sharing them is of course even worse. :pirate:

That said, we're not interested in being assholes about it. If you feel the need to save copies of the comics to make it easier to read them later, that also means you're not eating our bandwidth every time you go archive-diving. Drop some cash in the tip jar occasionally and we're good.

However, we really have to ask that people not share the files at all. If you're going to do it, there's not much we could or even would do to stop you, but we'd really like it if you wouldn't. I'm proud that people here are so willing to do that... it speaks very clearly to me of just how much you all love and want to support the comic.

Just so long as somebody has it just in case you and poe happen to have a 'before turning the gun upon himself' moment.

If it helps, I solmonly swear that if Impy and Poe be devoured by a horde of rabid weasles that I, The Ancient Viking Master, will personally research ways to weaponize those rabid weasles, sell them to some poor third world dictator, and use the funds to restore whatever portion of the interweb the weasles didn't gnaw up too badly. That failing, maybe someone on the forum here could invent a time machine with which we could send an intrepid suc...er...volunteer back in time to the day before tomorrow to stop the interweb from dying.

That being said, as someone mentioned earlier, as soon as the store is up and running again, we should have compendiums of both Errant Story and Exploitation Now, available in a high-tech nuevo format called 'Book'*. Book-formatted archives use a form of zip-like compression called binding (now with stunning near-2-dimensional compression), and are suitable for both text and images. Books are Windows, Mac, and Linux compatible, and you can even take them into the bathroom without worrying about all those pesky cords and horrible electrocution deaths. Books are magnet-safe, do not require adapters, are safe to take aboard airplanes, and should that plane crash in a mountain range, can be used in emergencies to cook parts of that soccer team you were traveling with. So not only does getting the book help the author, it also helps you, the reader/fan.

*Books are meant to be used as part of a healthy well-rounded education. Do not attempt to take books internally. If you should get a book in your eye, rinse with cool running water and see your doctor immediately. Books stored for long periods of time may become valuable. Please consult your doctor if you have any questions. Books may not be for you. Do not take books, especially Poe's, if you are: pregnant with an interdimensional squid monster, uncontrolably bleeding from both eyes, the square root of a number divisible by cheese, not able to take a joke, or are a member of a soccer team that's crash-landed in the mountains. In the state of California, Poe's works may cause cancer... but then again, apparently everything does in the state of California. Have you ever seen their disclaimers? They make this look like haiku. Where was I? Oh, yes, read a book.

2.57 GB with 25633 files.

And that doesn't include my Dead Comics collection(comics that are finished or that have just vanished).

My main reason for archiving comics has never been to share them, or even really to read them without wasting bandwidth (although this is a benefit), but to save them in case, like revolutio said, the comics disappear in a hypothetical tomorrow. I learned my lesson from the Jar well.

...are you sure you don't have some high-quality movies cleverly hidden in among your comics, or possibly several modern video games installed to the relevant folders? I wouldn't have said that there were that many halfway decent comics on the internet.

At least I can compete with Actor. A few afternoons of rereading things over winter break seem to be in order.

Most of it is scans of paper comics that I'm too poor to buy. You know, all of Civil War, Planet Hulk, Infinite Crisis (and it's lead ins), OYL, Sandman, Preacher, Strangers in Paradise...the list goes on. I figure it's somewhere over 1000 full comics.

Speaking personally, when I ship out overseas (still a while off), I'll probably make an attempt to download the comic just because internet access will no longer be a sure thing. But, I will also be sending a regular check to the tip jar.

Actually, Impy, just a thought: would you guys considder selling the zip file for the archives? I know I'd pay a reasonable fee not to have to go through every page to download. I don't know how that would influence your advertising revue, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I'd honestly have to think about that more before saying one way or another. I can already tell you that if we were to sell such a thing, it would be on a disc, and probably organized into some sort of album so that it retains a hint of being proprietary. We wouldn't do it as a simple download, I think. Probably we'd do it as counterparts to the books, or maybe as discs of the three sections of the story.

I'm not sure there's much point to it, though. I may be wrong (which is why I have to think about it a lot more), but I suspect that most of our audience would rather use their time than spend money. And how does one price a product that someone could easily get for free if they wanted to? Plus, as my good friend the Ancient Viking Master noted already, there's always the book format.

So... in short, yes, I'll consider it. No promises, though.
