I imagine healing something major with magic would feel like setting a bone with force, but worse. Essentially, it's destroying the damaged cells and somehow (that'd be the magic part) replacing them with undamaged cells. I can't imagine the forceful destruction and regeneration of body parts would be pleasant.
I once took a workshop on Therapeutic Touch, and while I freely admit that TT and other forms of faith-based healing might be complete nonsense, it was still an interesting experience. As I recall, the sensation of performing therapeutic touch (which, incidentally, is done without touching) was one of warmth and pressure, kind of like sticking your hand out the car window at 40 mph on a summer day.
I decided that perhaps I wasn't cut out to be a healer when rather than gently coax the energy to flow properly on a difficult patient, I essentially cut it a new channel and told it to start behaving or else. Therapeutic touch is generally performed without contacting the skin, and the person had their eyes closed so couldn't see what I was doing, but they claimed that they suddenly felt much better. Nonetheless, I didn't feel that my approach indicated a good personality fit with the idea of patienly redirecting other people's energy.

In Christian lore and from second-hand and personal experience I'd say divine healing is usually painless, sometimes instantanous, sometimes over time.
My nanomages attack from the root, thermal strike for example makes you hot or cold without interferring with anything else. The magic Ian is using looks more... frictitious.

Females are usually (despite the vulnerability of testicles over boobs) much weaker physically (men's brains are slightly larger, not for thinking, but for the need to control additional volume of muscles). Though their extra X-chromosom gives them increased social awareness, their numbers count fewer decisive personalities and culture is skewed in their disfavor.
Anyways, you need 2 for a family unit so it sort of drives the competition moot.
