I love her whole I could give a f**k attitude about marriage.
Why arent there more women like her out there?
besides being in prison for other aubrey like tendancies?

Blue Sun Missile
loves how they view marriage, sidestepping the whole "institution" part of it.

There are other women like that out there. A lot of women.

You obviously have never met them. I believe this is because they've been avoiding you for obvious reasons.

Seconded. We don't all conform to the 'girlie' stereotype because it is just that, a stereotype.

Where the hell do people get this stuff anyway? Apparently all women like shopping and stupid weepy romantic movies, don't like sex, don't give blowjobs and don't feel that their lives are complete until they've dressed up in an expensive white dress and declared their undying love for the first bloke they can embarass into standing next to them in church until death or more likely divorce do them part.

It's called gender sterotyping via marketing. It starts with baby clothes, moves to Disney and then carried on for the rest of your life.

Clearly, the people responsible for this should be shot. By 'shot', I mean 'whined about loudly and continually in my Live Journal'.

Conversely you could actually get of your ass and do something about it.

I suggest Culture Jamming or smilar activites which, may not change the world on a large scale but it'll certainly make you feel better and communicate your message and encourage other people to look at marketing in a different way.

And all for the price of a marker pen and the will to quit whining and act.

I'm pretty sure that's more or less how Poe and I decided to get married. The conversation went something like this:

Me: "I have reached a terrifying but inescapable conclusion."
Poe: "Oh? Do tell?"
Me: "I dunno, it's pretty scary... you might not want to hear it."
Poe: "Tell."
Me: "We're going to end up married aren't we?"
Poe: "Oh, is that all? Yeah, I had sortof assumed it."

Edit: Also, my dress will be red and designed to be used on other occasions, and I will be barefoot.

I am amazed that the conversation did not incur any moogle-looking people to burst into flames. Some reason I can only think of nookie fairy beating on Ralph and the first page of Exploitation Now when he is doing the commerical for an beer ad. Alcohol induced flames are always the brightest.

Though at the sametime I am imagining Aubrey in a white grown. Which is worse? The world may never know.

Not all women do give blowjobs, but I've yet to meet one who really doesn't like sex.

Reminds me of a joke

What is the difference between a SLUT and a BITCH?
a SLUT sleep with EVERYONE
a BITCH sleeps with everyone but YOU

It was on TV, so it must be true.

While not every woman caters to every one of those stereotypes, and almost none fit them all, a vast majority of women fill a majority of the female stereotypes. Similarily with men and male stereotypes.

The "modern" female stereotypes are not endorsed by companies because they are idiots listening to bigotted rumblings of an older generation. This is why alot of gender stereotypes (ie, women can't drive) are abandoned by companies, its statistically untrue (infact statistically women are better drivers and thus get better insurance rates).

When a marketting company has billions on the line they make sure that these stereotypes/statistics are true, never underestimate the deductive power of greed.

So while the odds of any woman being all of these things (or a man being a nascar loving, explosion watching, sex crazed, steak eating beer guzzler) is very low as every has their own traits, the odds that either will share none of those traits (Ie a man who doesn't either like cars, violence, extensive sex/pornography, meat or beer) is very low.

So to go with the man example: If you had a TV station which showed nothing but Cars, Action films, scantily clad women etc (say spike tv) you would gets lots of male viewers, most of them would not be interested in every show, and you would also get alot of female viewers watching alot of the material, but you could make a solid advertising decision that there would be a target male audience watching at any given time.

I wasn't aware of this steriotype.

My main group of friends now consists mostly of women (does that make me less of a man? Probly) who I am starting a weekend RPG group with. Marriage has come up in conversation a few times and the only thing that ever comes out of it is "I'm naming my kids after transformers."

You get a gold star if you can name the author of that quote.

Second post on here, but I've been reading SP for a long time. I can honestly say that I've identified with various characters in the strip in different ways, but lately, it's been hitting home.

First, I'm pregnant (unplanned), and I found out very close to the time when Mike found out his girlfriend was pregnant. Creeeeepy!

Second, this strip about marriage. I have never dreamed of a big wedding, or any wedding at all, for that matter. I am going to get married because going to Vegas for a weekend sounds fun, because if I still live with my bf in 6 years, I'll be legally married anyway, and to get my parents to finally stop nagging me.

Other than those reasons, it really doesn't matter to me either way. I think it's a generational frame of mind to believe that love is boundless, and that people can be in love, compatible, and happy without a piece of paper to prove it. Not that there aren't still 20 somethings who believe that marriage is "the only way". But there are many more, I think, especially in urban america, who like things that are open and free. We like things that don't restrict us.

I'm still going to marry my bf for practical reasons, but if we never marry, I would not be less happy with him.

So, I loved this strip because I completely identified with Aubrey's "it's not what really matters in our relationship, so I don't care either way" attitude.

(oh, and there's no way in hell I'd wear a white dress. My skin's pasty enough without one. Maybe I'll go naked!)
