Errant Story is over now, and starting this morning it is rerunning the comics with a commentary track. That means that it is also generating new discussion threads for the old pages. The original discussions for those pages happened over here, though, so how would people feel about my adding a link into each of those threads crediting that the original discussion took place here? It wouldn't be bringing those threads back to life or anything, just acknowledging the history.

For example: http://forums.errantstory.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2124

Right now, only people who already have an account can see the thread here, I think. If linking the old threads is to generate more users here on Kyhm's, which I hope it would (can people even sign up now?), probably it'd have to become publicly visible, but read-only.

If you'd rather I just take the link down and never speak of it again, I can do that too, I guess. It's up to you.

I think its a good idea. If only for the poor people that get to encounter the Pocket Dimension thread for the first time.

Actor.

Personally, I don't mind if you link to the old ES threads for people to look at, as the only active admin I don't mind either, so I've put the ES forums back into a place where they can be read by unregistered guests.

As far as people registering for accounts, I'm very ambivalent. Way back when, I shut down registration because it was 20+ spam accounts a day (thankfully only a few each day were activated, but it still set off my OCDness). I'd rather not have those problems return. Also, leaving registration closed will definitely ensure this place will eventually die.

On the other hand I could reactivate registration, possibly get this place shambling a bit more and then see what happens. I could even unlock the old ES forum, if that's what you want, Impy.

As I said, I'm ambivalent. Anyone with thought re. status quo vs opening this place up to the world?

Has it really been almost 10 years since Errant Story started. JFC, what the hell happened. I suppose I should maybe try reading it again now that it's complete...

As for opening up the forums, I'm for it. I doubt this place will ever really die (until Kyhm or whoever the hell hosts it now decides to pull the plug). If nothing else, it'll make things interesting around here, though whether for good or bad is hard to say. Then again, I'm not the one clamping down on spambots, so there is that.

Ack, I feel an archive binge coming on...

I'm also in favor of making the historical content available. We all put so much time and effort into it over the years, and I see no reason to hide that from people on the current CAS boards.

As far as linking goes, I've nothing against it. It's a lot of effort for Impy to go through, even if it's done along with the timed release of each rerun page of ES.

If there's interest in reopening registration I'm willing to look at better captchas, newer phpbb or different software, etc. I'm willing and able to put in concentrated bursts of effort from time to time on the software, but I'm not willing to make changes that increase other peoples' effort, and I can't promise I'll can spend real ongoing effort myself on this place.

I have been noodling around a bloggy thing with a focus on DIY and hardware hacking, but I'm not sure how to connect that with here, or even if I should. I also know that I could quite easily go weeks without updating a bloggy thing either, so I'm not sure it's a good idea.

I'm still hosting it, currently out of my own box in my work's server room. Since it's basically costing nothing I'm in no hurry to shut it down. Every time I check I find a few elders chatting, and I get a bit nostalgic, but something else grabs me before long.

Heck, I'd probably reopen registration if you updated to a better captcha even if there was noone asking for registration to return; the current captcha is made of arse.
Updates to phpbb might be nice as well. If a phpbb update can make the search function more effective then I suspect those people who return looking for a specific post/thread they vaguely recall will appreciate it.

I'm not expecting with the possibility of reopening registration that this place would return to the golden days of yore, however a little more activity might be nice.

Oh god, I forgot how chaotic it used to be. A whole lot of these threads predate me, and I can't actually tell which is which. Does anyone want to help me out on identifying which old threads go to which comic? I kinda got lost.
