Well, it seems that kyhm has fallen off the face of the earth again, leaving the forums in temporary limbo. But that's no reason to sit around doing nothing, so we may as well start organising and commenting upon what people are suggesting should happen with the forums to make them interesting and active once more. I guess I'll sticky this thread once I have TEH FORUM SUPAPOWAZ. :V

So currently, we have (being optimistic here) around 60 people who care about the community and wish to stick around and possibly even post. At that level of population, we have too many forums to build up any sort of critical mass of discussion, therefore we should probably cut back on the number and expand the roles of some of the forums we possess. This here is a list of current and new forums and what I feel should done with them divided by existing categories with a brief comment where necessary...

Community
 • Unrelated
 • Roleplaying - to be moved to a new group, but internally, untouched. Perhaps locked and roleplaying made part of creative arts forum.
 • Game board - to be moved to a new group with roleplaying, but internally, untouched.
 • Current Events & Serious Business - Debate Club renamed and expanded to include discussion of current events.
 • Image Dump
 • Hall of fame/flame - A new forum to put good unrelated threads out to pasture and prevent them from being necromanced and turning into 5 pages of laughs followed by 15 pages of depressing "lol, remember this guys?"
 • Post something archive - merged back into unrelated with its threads remaining locked.
 • Webcomic Hell - new forum for discussion of any webcomic, past, present or future.

Things & Stuff
 • Bulletin Board - give it a rename and make it the forum for discussing everything about the forums. Kest suggested something like Meta I think...
 • Webcomic colab forum - deleted or turned into the backend for the frontend. More on this later...
 • Polling station - merged into bulletin board with threads locked.
 • Secret mod forum - locked and moved to a new archive category.

Comics
 • ES, EN & SOFFAP - fate to be determined. Ultimately, archived and locked.
 • Midlands/Heliothaumic/Empire Song
 • RIF - hanging around if spools still wants a forum for it.
 • S*P - no real opinion on it. Can stay if people want it.
 • Stoats - to become the new creative arts forum, can't remember if I thought of anything about the name.

Dead shit
 • All existing forums - locked and archived with the permission of the moderators, or merged into Webcomic hell.

Now some specifics...
Admin and moderator guidelines - Discussed in this thread.
I think some form of guidelines are necessary for admins and moderators so that they know what is and isn't acceptable and that the community knows they aren't abusing their powers. As part of this I would suggest leaving moderation to the moderators and admins become a form of oversight or point of appeal on any moderation. Essentially, admins as supreme and impartial administrators. Because of this, I'd suggest that admins cannot also be moderators, except in cases where they have their own webcomic forum.

User guidelines - Also discussed in this thread.
Along with admin and moderator guidelines would be user guidelines, as such, what is and isn't acceptable to post on the forums. These can be as broad or as general as the community desires. Individual forums can then add to (or possibly remove from) these guidelines as the moderator feels is appropriate for the nature of their forum.

Unrelated
Unrelated would be given its own moderators, either by some form of vote from the unrelated community, or appointed by the admins. Those moderators would then have the task of devising any guidelines for unrelated that they and the community feel necessary and policing them.

Frontend
Currently in designer limbo. Volunteers welcome. Early design concept from a while back. Feel free to make suggestions here as to what else could go on there besides content from the creative arts forum. Putting webcomics from the forums on the frontend has also been suggested and is looking promising.

Backend

Back when I initially conceived of the creative community frontend thing (I'm sure others had thought of it beforehand), I pictured it being run directly off a separate forum here as per how the baron suggested in the petition thread. It would not be pretty, but it would work. I'm sure there's better suggestions out there for how to set up the backend.

I will flesh out my idea for reorganizing the boards into something more useful here, then.

[X] Features <-- this is a collapsible group/category btw

Heliothaumic/Empire Song.
chat about Rince's comics.

Retrogressive Indexing and Filing
Spool's comic.

This is an Example Forum <-- underlines indicate links, btw
Example description!

Subforums: Subforums

[X] Community

General Discussion
Chat about hobbies, absurdity, books, games, movies, whatever. Place for goofing off.
(Funnel all posts from old unrelated here, delete empty leftover forums. Also if get the chance merge old image board into this while keeping hosting functions. Stickies include interesting/entertaining links, introduction HI GUYS IM NEW thread, photo/location thread, etc.)

Subforums: Webcomic Hell, (Random Comic Discussion) Image Board, Forum Games, (The old Game Board) Hall of 'Fame'

Serious Discussion
Chat about current events, technical junk, debate issues, place to go for and offer advice.
(Funnel Debate Club here. Unrelated focus is basically split between this forum and General. Stickies include helpful links and such.)

Subforums: Meta (Forum about the forums, funnel bulletin board content here.)

Creative Works
Post/discuss artwork, stories, whatever. Join in community projects, compete in contests, partake in roleplaying. Stoats.
(Add image board functionality. Merge Stoats, Webcomic Collaboration Forum, Roleplaying, you get the idea.)

these collapse/expand categories btw --> [X] Primordial Ooze

i think kesty's layout suits the current size of our forum and will funnel our current and new users into concentrated groups of conversation.

As (if) the community once again begins to grow, we'll subdivide it, but we could almost do away with the subforums at this point.

If we don't initially use the subforums and just have big, blanketing forums, i'd like to see little icons that you could use to suggest what topics your thread is relevant to, like a little speech bubble logo or comic page logo if it's a discussion about comics, a little stoat if it's art challenge, a little dice if it's about RPing, a little ink quill if it's about writing, those sorts of things.

actually, that might also be a good little visual indicator for news items etc on the front page.

the coders will have better knowledge of how easy this will be to implement, and it's up to everyone to discuss if they think it would be an improvement to the forums or not.

EDIT:

these post icons show up on nearly every other forum so i dont see why not.

Kest, I'd rather see something more akin to what Comic Genesis has going, with collapsible groups, instead of having to look inside a general discussion forum to get to webcomic hell, etc. Collapsible groups would allow for all the archived forums to be hidden unless someone were to directly click on whatever that group of forums were called. As a kinda distant second alternative, perhaps Something Awful's system of listing subforums on the main directory with the major forum would work.

Secondly, seriously not a fan of merging bulletin board with debate club. BB threads bear little semblance to DC threads and tend to have a bit more drama and less ad hominem in them. BB is a lot more of a helpdesk at the moment than a discussion area. A lot of it is just a vibe that I'm getting and can't really express in words.

Thirdly, I figure that perhaps Image board and unrelated should be kept separate because currently image board hosted images are eating at least 12gb of bandwidth a month. Give future superunrelated imagehosting capacity and I suspect it may blow out even further (or there'll be no more bandwidth available after a fortnight). Maybe do it after the image plugin thing is fixed so that images get culled after a certain length of time once more, not to mention the googlebots get told to stop eating the bandwidth and fuck off. Until that time I feel that it's better to keep the two separate and make image board offlimits to users who aren't logged in.

the bandwidth considerations do unfortunately make it sensible to keep them seperate. The other option is for users to use tinypic for hosting needs. the SEEM to be keeping the images for a very long time at least.

Serious discussion is more than just debate forum (read: graveyard forum) it is also partly unrelated. bulletin board would fit within the category for suggesting overall board improvements, mod discussions, etc.

it may be more appropriate as a subforum "Meta" like in my original idea though.

Yeah, that would be my preference.

It's a good idea and I'd love to merge image board into unrelated (except perhaps for the large avatar thread), but it's not a good thing to do at this stage, in my opinion.

Well, I think they may be ES people who've not yet created forum accounts. The rest would be spambots and googlebots.

A list of forums that would exist based upon my proposals (This time I'll steal Kest's section names {and assuming the departure of CAS}) in no particular order of precendence. Comics

 • Retrogressive Indexing and Filing } Pending comment from Spools
 • S*P } Pending opinion from wider community

General Discussion
 • Unrelated } Can we rename it?
 • Image dump } merge with unrelated at a later date
 • Game Board

Serious Discussion
 • Bulletin Board/Meta

Creative Works
 • Roleplaying } Pending opinion from someone who cares about roleplaying
 • Stoats

Primordial Ooze (Why primordial ooze, kest?)
 • Mod board
 • ES, EN
 • All extant dead comics

Also, ptlis seems to have offered to do up a backend. Note to self: hound him.

why would these be a subforum? :curious:

Although primordial might be best as a separate group instead of a forum within Community so it could be collapsed.

Ah, crossed wires. I was interpreting General Discussion and Serious Discussion as being akin to the current Webcomics section, community section and so forth and thus only using them as titles for a group of forums that ultimately could be considered to fall into the categories of 'general discussion' and 'serious discussion.'

The forum(s) -> Kyhm Forums and all forums within
Category -> Subsection of the forums (eg. Webcomics, Community)
Forum -> Individual forums within a category on the forums (eg. bulletin board, stoats)

definitely have the imageboard locked to guest viewers. One question, when imageboard images are hotlinked in other boards on the forums, would they become invisible to guest viewers as well?

Would making the entire forums invisible to guests scare away new blood? "I have to sign up to see stuff? effaaart! *leaves*"

could we make images hosted on the forum only viewable to logged in users?

i propose once again merging unrelated and game board, and perhaps calling it devil's playground or anything goes or something along that vein. The less forums we have at this point, the more people we will have in each forum.

I also propose a different idea for all the old archives catagory. Move hall of fame/flame here for all the threads that are deemed cool, and Dross, for all the crap that nothing interesting happened in. To make the sorting process simpler, users can nominate threads for :AWESOME: archiving to an archives mod, who can then check the thread and move it.

SO!

Comics
 • Webcomic Hell } moved here since it's about webcomics. could possibly be mereged with unrelated to begin with as well.
 • Heliothaumic/Midlands/Empire Song
 • Retrogressive Indexing and Filing } Pending comment from Spools

General Discussion
 • Devil's playground }unrelated and game board merged - needs a cool name
 • Image dump } merge with unrelated at a later date or make images hosted on forums unviewable to guests and merge them now.

Serious Discussion
 • Bulletin Board/Meta
 • Current Events, Debate & Serious Business

Creative Works
 • Stoats } everything creative, including roleplaying

Primordial Ooze
 • Hall of Fame/Flame }cool threads from the entire forum that have been locked.
 • Dross } every other old/dead thread. put them in forums if you like, but it's all crap, so who cares?

other ideas for the archive forum names: wheat/chaff, needle/haystack, you get the idea.

Gameboard sucks and no one uses it, don't you dare stink up unrelated or creative stoats. Put it in with roleplaying and call it good.
If we do that, then just put stoats in with General discussions section and then there's one less confusing subforum.
The word Stoats can go in the description of such a forum, it makes no sense as the title.

Also, please don't kill my forum.

That frontend is more boring than wet cardboard in a drain. Let me at it. I'll have it by saturday.

The new ES boards are now up and running. I've taken the liberty of setting a flattening date for the CAS-related boards here of Monday, the 27th of August. If an admin would lock those boards and flatten them appropriately on that date, I'd appreciate it, and you can then move them to the Primordial Ooze with impunity.

That makes the 27th a good date for the reorganization then. i hereby formally propose we re-shuffle the boards on the 27th of August, to the following format:

Quote:
Features
Webcomic Hell
Retrogressive Indexing and Filing

Community
Creative Works <--- stoats, webcomic collaboration forum, roleplaying (aka creative writing), certain image dump threads
General Discussion <--- unrelated, forum games
Image Dump
Meta <--- bulletin board
Serious Discussion <--- unrelated and debate

Primordial Ooze
Locked Forums: Errant Story, Heliothaumic/Empire Song, Mod Board, Errant Story, Expatriates Now, Selling Out For Fun And Profit, Unf! S*P, Post Something Archives, Polling Station, Angel Knights, Shameless Self Promotion - The Webcomic, High Impact Wrestling, Mode-7, Crescent, Sockhead!, The Asylum Squad

anyone second it?

Seconded- (let's call the one there "serious business", it confuses me otherwise.)
