I see they solved the numbers problem I mentioned earlier.
So, after watching episodes eight and nine at Veoh, think I may have figured the show out:
It's a reversal of the old setup - where the villain (ZEarth) is the protagonist and the heroes out to stop it are antagonists.
Dodgy part: even after all fifteen have been destroyed, ZEarth will return since there will be one remaining pilot. The pilot will either suicide to save the world from the ship's self-destruct sequence or...

My current theory is that there really aren’t any good guys, and the fights are completely pointless, aside from the entertainment of whatever beings Kokopelli and Dung Beetle work for. With both sides having been duped into thinking the other is the bad guy. All that death and destruction for nothing… Such a cheery show :)
Although from a blog entry I saw the other day, apparently the director of the anime is in hot water* for saying he didn’t really like the original manga, and planned to change the ending to something more optimistic, which I’m not sure I like the sound of. I may end up having to read the manga after all…
(My guess for the ending is that after the Earth is "saved" the last pilot will try going after whatever forces are behind everything, and probably fails. Any sort of reality-reset to them being alive and still in the cave will make me a sad panda.)
* Hot water being defined as “nerds on the internet complaining loudly”, admittedly.
EDIT: Also,

It’s funny, but if you’re going for any semblance of psychological realism, the original was a lot closer to how an actual 14-year-old would act.
Personally, I rather liked the fact that the protagonist was an emotionally-unstable pussy who was severely unsuited for the role. Nice change from the usual heroic characters, blah blah.
