The library suggestion is good.

Well, I'm on bedrest for a while, and I a'ready ran through what I'd planned to run through the summer. The general consensus seems to be no the Potter. This wheel of time serious though, what's that like?

Vass is being a dick. HP is fine, and WoT is fine as well, but it's cool to not like them. Soon, it will be cool to not like Martin's Song of Fire and Ice books.

WoT is...long. too long. about 5 books too long.

The book would have made a good 4 or six part series, but around book 5 or 6 i started to lose interest, and began skimming. I didn't care about all the side characters, and was losing interest in the major ones.

Part of the reason for my losing interest was also that i probably got sick of waiting for the 'next book' to arrive, and by the time it had i was too foggy on the increasingly convoluted plot and who was alive, who was dead, and who had come back to life to jump back in. Since he's nearly done and there's like 12 or so books waiting for you, you may not have this issue.

HP is fine for a bit of fantasy fluff, but the magic in it kinda irritates me. also, teen drama :V

Sword of truth is sufferring the same issues that WoT is, although it's compunded by goodkind only knowing one plot and just rehashing it. the first three books are alright though.

If you want some books with an interesting writing style, and a pragmatic look at magic, check out the recluce series by L.E Modessitt Jr. Magic of Recluce is one of my all-time favourite reads. He manages to make woodcrafting more interesting than magic in many high fantasy series i've read.

The Immortal Prince by Jennifer Fallon is also an excellent read, great character-driven high fantasy. I dare you not to love Cayal. He's Mat Cauthon times a billion.

The Rhapsody Trilogy by elizabeth haydon is a nice bit of romantic high fantasy fluff, although not to everyone's tastes. this is a rainy weekend series. Also good if you've got romance blues.

The other series i'm really enjoying, of which there is fiour books now is by Barb and J.C Hendee. the series doesn't have an overall title, but the first book is called Dhampir. The series starts out as what you think will be a pretty standard fantasy/horror vampire hunter story, sortof a cross between buffy and old school fantasy, but the buildup of the overall plot is really nice and slow, with minimal exposition, the pacing for the stories is just superb, and i'm really enjoying the slow reveal of this world and it's characters. Chech out this series.

the only real benifit of reading HP and WoT is the water-cooler conversation, because everyone else you know has read them. They're okay stories, but there's lots of other stuff out there too.

hope you find something of interest in this selection.

I'm currently re-reading The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, which are damn fine books.

Frank Herbert is always good, as is Orson Scott Card.

Song of Ice and Fire is a good series, but be warned that it takes the scope of war very seriously. Though it starts with a cast of several dozen, it quickly expands as the story encompasses the entire world. And there will be times when the entirety of a chapter is devoted to "hey look, that important looking general guy just got stabbed in the back during such and such skirmish". There is an incredible amount of detail and plots within plots that there is no conceivable way to figure out who's on what side with who else and whether that faction still exists anymore. But it's amusing for killing time. Lots of time. My only disappointment was that the last book turned out to be only half a book, and not the half I wanted.

Sword of Truth is finally getting somewhat interesting again (like Mad said, only the first three are really worth reading, the rest are just rehashes) now that he's ditched the old dynamic, though I have yet to read the recent one.

L.E. Modesitt Jr is a good writer that can manage to tie together sci-fi and fantasy elements coherently. I am currently waiting for Natural Ordermage. The best part is that the books are mostly self-contained stories that can almost be read in any order to an extent.

Good luck with your recovery.

Modesitt has a new Recluse book coming out? Awesome.

And I like Laurell K Hamilton's "Anita Blake" series. Vampires and Werewolves and Zombies. And Sex. Lot's of sex in the later ones.

Brian Lumley's "Necroscope" series is good. Very different vampire mythos.

Tanya Huff's "Blood" series. Why are all my suggestions vampire stories?

Susan Cooper's "The Dark is Rising" Sequence is good. Celtic mythology reimagined.

And Tad Williams "War of the Flowers" is a really good take on what the realms of faerie might be like in modern times. Fantastic story.

When he says fluff he means it, this series is sappier than an Eddings book.

It does contain a great scene where the lead male uses a dildo made out of water to pleasure the lead female.

Hahahaha, don't be retarded. While I agree that pretty much all of his books are the exact same story over and over (hello David Eddings!), the first three books are not the golden best. Faith of the Fallen? Now that was fantastique.

You are a horrible person, Kitty. You are the man that made them make a Blood Ties tv series, I am sure of it. (Gina Holden as Coreen made up for it though because she is SMOKING HOT).

Correct. The weight of my desire warped reality enough to bring it into being. Unfortunately, it was only strong enough to make it a Lifetime production.

I hate it when they butcher good books to make crappy TV.

If Sci-Fi is to your tastes, The Honor Harrington books are great reads (book one is On Basilisk Station) and most libraries should have at least one of the Hammer's Slammers books available. As far as fantasy goes, though, I am a tad shocked nobody's mentioned Discworld. The Discworld books are funny as all hell, and great reads when you're on the mend.

Edit: I have no idea what Ez is talking about...
