I wrote it all out so I am damn well doing something with it:

Gunnerkrigg court is super-sucky. First strike against it is the lame ass steampunk-mad-scientist-ooooh, pretty magic setting which also happens to be the overused, yet usually underdeveloped gimmick of a british boarding school. The boring non-sequitur riff gothic lolita main character is niether interesting nor inspiring, makes no indication of human emotion or pathos. This broad is more cynical and lifeless than most bricks, and none of the characters express even the slightest awe over their world or experiences. A world, by the way, so ill-devised that zombie robot pirates fighting ghost vampire plushies would warrant a whole storyarc.

Don't even get me started on the artwork, this asshole seems to think that because he can flat in photoshop and draw big eyes that his fictional adventures somehow leap off the page. Not a whit of thought is given to layout, expression (how convenient that none of his characters have anything to express), or even a basic understanding of anatomy or texture. Not to mention that apparently several pages of a kid walking through hallways in a six panel grid constitutes pacing or even--dare I try to percieve actual intention in this pile of dreck--actual character development, as far as this dipshit "artist" is concerned.

This is the fetid, unsalvageable vitriol that can only pour from the over heated magical-girl fetish over indulged assholes who only watch the movie versions of half-decent children's books that everyone who even pretends to live in the real world has the sense to actually read, and who's experience with the word "comic" went straight through ctrl-at-dlt and stopped half an internet short of the only debatably better Dresden Codak.

This crappy-no-good whack-off filth is not allowed to be called a comic and those who enjoy it need to put down the Legal Drug companion book and try walking into an actual art museum or an actual state park, assuming, of course, that the healthy dose of real beauty, artistic consideration, and emotional resonance doesn't overload and kill them. Not that such a loss would effect the world in any negative way.

This comic sucks get over it. I hate you.

I've read the first chapter and find it an unispired mess of suck. I have very little hope for chapter 2 to make me like this.

edit: just read chapter 2 this is getting boring quickly. It is nothing but attempting to be silly while showing the main character unaffected by all the stupid things around her.

edit2: chapter 3 couldn't hold me this comic has no life in it.

Only if they have lots of swear words in them.

As an aside to gunnarkrigg sucking, I am a longtime webcomic masochist, checking up on absolutely horrifying webcomics hoping desparately that they might have somehow magically improved since the last time. that is why I had Sublunary in my bookmarks for a year and a half.I mention this only because Gunnarkrigg is one I have not looked at and will never look at on prupose ever again.
I hate it that much.

Hooray for bile-filled webcomics reviews! I am hoping that this sort of thing becomes a staple around here.

That said, if you don't like Gunnerkrigg you're fucking nuts. :argh:

It seems premature to write off the world it takes place in as being "ill-devised" when at this point we hardly know anything about it. We don't even know what the hell is the deal with the school itself is, let alone the forest across the river from it or the wider world. Tom Siddell has managed to creeate a real sense of mystery surrounding the setting. Additionally, Antimony has been exposed to this world for for quite some time, so it would be more unrealistic if she was in awe of all the weird stuff that's happening.

While the designs of the main characters are rather simplified, the art can often be quite atmospheric and detailed, and many of the characters-- particularly the creatures-- have very inventive and expressive designs. How can you not like good ol' Coyote?

While everyone is entitled to an opinion, if you don't like Gunnerkrigg Court, in my opinion you should be locked in a box at the bottom of the ocean to keep you your ill-conceinved notions of quality far away from the internet forever.

:argh: :argh: :argh: :argh:

No comic on Earth does pacing worse than El Goonish Shive, 16 months to write a party that lasted one night.
FUCKING HELL I was reading that the entire time and could barely believe that number when I looked at it.

GC isn't too bad, I don't read it regularly however so my rage isn't very well developed towards it. I don't mind the characters, as shallow as they can appear.

Ctrl-Alt-Del is rubbish, it took me a long time to give up on that but I finally have and I've been going cold turkey two weeks now.

Actor.

I feel much the same way and have been trying to come up with a succinct and tactful response such as this. Thanks for saving me the effort.

I don't know what you've been reading, Spools, but my impression of Gunnerkrigg's setting doesn't seem very similar to much else I've seen or read, especially in the world of webcomics.

Also, this level of vitriol seems rather un-Spoolslike. :-?

Honestly it's the worst comic I've ever read all the way through.

Robot plus ghost river plus ancient demon trikster plushie plus magic plus rocket plane equals ill devised. too many different things too often, with no sense of history or even a hint of reason for all the uneccessarily conflicting genres haphazardly shoved into this lousy excuse of a "world". If there was a real sense of mystery in that stupid comic I might have found it at all interesting, but it doesn't and I don't.
Additionally, at twelve years old, no matter how crappy your life is, a kid's going to find something interesting to coo at, and this kid has never displayed an ounce of actual adolescent excitement or thrill at anything she's been presented with. Ever.

Maybe if you took your childish notions of quality to an actual bookstore once in a while you'd be more sagacious regarding your quality of internets.

I fail to see how this is a bad thing. Image

Arguements are more fun when we go out of our way to be impolite!

hurr i like a comic u dont im illiterate whats a book

The setting really isn't as haphazard as you're saying it is. You have steampunk technology robot junk on one side of the river, and magical crap on the other side.

This just plain isn't true. I'm not going to go through the whole archives and dig up every counter-example, but right off the top of my head I can think of the whole thing with the tree. Antimony is pretty somber most of the time, which is understandable given that she spent most of her life in a hospital and her mother just died, but she's not some kind of robot.

In conclusion, Spools hates things that are fun and should never be trusted to discern things that are good from things that are bad ever. :V

One muppet-face does not an emotionally recognizable human make.

I'm not even going to find examples of the empty stares that Aluminum or whatever her name is gives every single new thing, becasue it would be a whole lot of boring anti-expressions, and I don't really see the point in causing myself such discomfort when I could be drinking.
