I've already had this discussion on /g/ many times but as I'm bored i figured I'd ask the forums opinion on it.

got a friend who wants to buy a mac book. now normally i wouldn't care what he does with his money but the guy is currently barely scraping by on his income (and he keeps trying to convince me to move in with him so i can share the rent. what and give up my masturbation time to cp? no way) yet he insists on getting a mac.

cause they're just that fucking cool he says. whats he going to use it for? at best browse the web and use a text editor. now as we all know macs are on the pricey side for just a 13 inch so me trying to be helpful i looked up different links and found him all sorts of deals on hp/dell/acer laptops and for what he's going to be doing (web/text). i though a simple laptop of 700-800 would suffice for him and i have found much superior systems with more ram or 15-17 inch screen then the standard 13 inch mac book (even found some that DIDN'T come with vista aids)

but noooooo he's already got the idea in his head that macs are fucking invincible, that they WILL NEVER EVER CRASH AND ARE _IMMUNE_ TO ANY KIND OF VIRUS NO MATTER WHAT IT IS. as /g/ has taught me its not the macs that we hate, its the mac fags who seem to have their own kind of warped logic and they never budge from the opinion that macs are superior when they've probably never even tried any other system/OS... not to mention that they have to voice out their opinion that they're right and you're wrong (seriously this guy barely uses computers... he KNOWS that I've tried everything. and yet he still spouts that 'man what do you know? macs are the shit!')

so what says kyhms on macs? more then likely the majority of opinions will be fuck him and let him starve for all we care but i figured maybe someone has some bit of wisdom that they'd feel like sharing

If he's not using it for games and is just using it for windows, browsing and word then a Windows lappy is cheaper and more reliable. If it gets a bug then back up your files on a USB and scrub the hard drive, re-install windows and start over.
I've no idea how to do any of that on a Mac but I'm sure its all integrated into itself so that even trying to do that would case Steve Jobs to come over to your house and iRape you.

Honestly, if he's that ignorant about computers and is only going to be using it for browsing the web and email, a mac isn't a bad idea. There is considerably less malware targeted at mac than windows PC's, after all. It may be due more to the former's lack of market share than inherent security, but the fact remains. Which means he stands a lower chance of getting his system filled with 20 different adware programs from free porn sites and running to you for help, or at least making it a less frequent occurrence. The OSX interface is also probably a bit more newbie-friendly than XP.

My iBook (yes, it's a couple of years old, thus not named macbook) has a one button touchpad. Makes games kind of hard. The official (yay, bluetooth...) wireless (which you would want) multi-button mouse costs a minor fortune (if you're a student, anyway). So does a new power cable, which i need (An accident involving a small bedside table and gravity).

My mac is nice. It's, IMHO, better than pc but probably not enough to warrant that much of a price difference. I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't for a nifty student discount, and some good experiences in learning to record music on a G4 stationary. It's stable, but not completely without crashes.
A problem is finding free stuff. There's just... less of it. I have tried and failed to find a good music notation program which doesn't involve actually paying around $600. That's even more than the mouse.

Your friend should postpone buying and try to save up the money if he's so horny for the mac, or, if it's not possible to wait, get a cheap pc instead.

well the deed is done. i spent THREE HOURS at a mac store while he tried to make a decision. Well i'm a nice enough guy to explain the differences between all those hard to understand jargon like oh RAM and GIGABYTE and what it is a CPU DOES. and the best part is after i explain these OH SO HARD TERMS, I again mention my opinion of how i personally think macs are pricey to which he goes 'man what would you know? you're just jelous'

at that point i told him fuck you and walked out before he had to chase me like a little bitch and beg me to go back in and help him choose. i didn't budge until the offering of free food was invoked... cause well i was hungry

anyways for all of you interested this is how the mind of a casual consumer works: you explain to him that this has more processing power, that this one has a dvd writer whilst the other one doesn't, that this one over here has more hard disk space and so on so forth. but what does the average consumer see?

the college that i attend has finally put in some online acounts for the XBOX 360's in the gaming room. so if any of you guys want to challenge me at Dead Or Alive or Halo 2 then drop your gamer tag and i'll send you a buddy request

and today i played dead or alive with my new account. Naturally i was at a C rank as i have only just begun, but i then join a match with this one guy who's A+ has a winning streak of 15. i play and very much HUMILIATE him with my superior playing skills. best part is after i beat him on the second round the little bitch quits so that his humiliating defeat cant be recorded
