I'm assuming that we still have a few firearm whackjobs reading since Kyhmnarock

Anyway, I heard tale that during WWI, in response to Germany's adoption of sniper tactics, that the British brought in big game hunters from India and Africa to teach their boys tracking and long range shooting.

I'm sorry, but that's fucking awesome. They hire Allen Quatermain to teach them how to hunt the Huns.

I heard it on a Discovery doco, but does anybody know if it's actually true, or have evidence to back it up?

I've heard that one too. I believe it is true to some extent(IIRC they got some hunters to supplement their sniper training, not to do the whole thing) but I can't find a reference off hand.

Enough crazy shit is known to have happened(like a US sub that killed a troop truck and a crane with a torpedo, or a young marine who convinced most of a Japanese division to surrender just by talking to them) that even some of the more suspect stuff, like your hunters teaching sniper training seem possible.

My personal favorite is this one: supposedly, when the order to surrender went out to the Kreigsmarine, one u-boat skipper decided to just surface where he was and run out the white flag. The place he was at the time? Halifax harbor, where he'd been for months.

In WW2 both sides just threw money at anything even remotely interesting that looked like it could win the war, even if it gave them a minor advantage over the other side, they were all desperate but also willing to do anything to win, its how we got so many cool things after the war.

Actor.
