Actually, I AM a figment of your imaginations.

All of them, in fact.

Yeah, I know, it's kinda weird.

You're a filthy liar, ez. You tried to give the rest of Australia the tasmanian plague, and we have photos to prove it.

Omni, on the other hand, is just another joke account that actor set up.

You were simply a fever dream, and those pictures are as convincing as those of UFOs.

I've now talked online with about six of you. And using subtle tests I've discovered that at least five of you are probably computers and the sixth one might be me from the future, trying to carefully warn me not to put my genitals into the electrical plugs.
But if I do that I'll get time travel powers! So now I'm doing it.

Actor.

I will hopefully be moving to the east coast (DC area if I'm lucky) by the end of the year. I think this makes me a person.

Anyone living on this godforsaken coast surely isn't a person, especially if they do so by choice.

Seriously though, it is kind of awesome that I know 90% of you only as serial literary works, as opposed to as human beings -- so other than a certain degree of interactivity (greatly limited now since the demise of the boards), my relationship with most of you is basically qualitatively the same as my relationship with Shakespeare or Homer.

(Of course, it could be argued that physical presence and speech doesn't actually change the situation, and that all communication is in essence literary/textual and subject to interpretation, but I'm drifting into dangerously Derridean waters here, and I permanently swore off my destructive Derrida dependence after converting to Orthodox Lacanianism.)

Okay, I'll shut up now.

What coast do I live on? West? North? South? (admittedly, I'm 360 miles from actual coast, but my state is on, like, three coasts, so that makes live on the coast, right?)

I know Miao 90% (okay, 99%) as serial literary works (side note: Miao in real life is almost as quiet as a book, especially when all of us in a crowded living room are buried in our own laptops). Though I've actually not read that much of her fiction. I think. *cigarette burn indicating that the reel should now be changed to the one discussing, pithily if in no other fashion, the fictions we tell each other about ourselves*

"Literature" and "fiction" aren't synonymous, guys -- "literature" to me would just mean the use of language as a tool to bring about altered mental states and the construction of new concepts(*). I've used the writings I find here as aids to create internal conversations among fictional personas I've also created using the info I get here. Whether the words themselves were created by actual individuals who correspond in some way to the people living in my head is sort of beside the point and doesn't change the actual nature of the process. (Besides, an actual human being can only "correspond" to a given collection of statements in the most indirect and metaphorical way.)

(*)Yes, I realize this is a kind of broad definition of literature, as it would seem to encompass everything from Proust to Wikipedia to a random supermarket conversation. But see, it's hard to define literature in a way that's broad enough to include what it needs to without including a lot of other things that we normally don't call "literature". We could just define literature as the written word, for example, but then that would mean that the Iliad only became "literature" when it was written down hundreds of years after its creation, and that pre-industrial cultures with rich oral traditions but no written language don't have a "native literature". I would say literature is more of a way of looking at language than a particular type of language per se -- perhaps another definition of literature I could give would be "language, in its capacity as art". Of course, defining "art" is just as problematic for similar reasons, but that's a discussion for another time.
