Discuss.

(Context: I had Abunai over for Thanksgiving, and verified with my senses (which, granted, may be fallible) that he is a real human being. And suddenly, it hit me that maybe, just maybe, other KyhmForumers might be real too! My worldview has been shattered! IT'S PEOPLE!! PEEEEEEEEOPLE!!!!!)
(Ahem.)

I've met two of the people posting in this thread.
But that only means that they're real if I'm actually real.
Which is questionable.

Actor.

Does it count if Actor and I confirm each other as real, if we aren't real to anybody else in this thread?

Maybe there are degrees to which people are real?
As in, if I've met you you're probably possibly real, but if you've met someone I've met but not me then you're only probably real, and if you've met someone who has met someone that I've met then you're possibly real but I don't trust it and if you've met someone who doesn't exist who thinks they've met someone who might exist who met someone who probably exists who's met me(who does exist) then you should get off the internet because you're probably not really who you say you are. Just like that FBI agent I met at the mall last week.

Actor.

I believe in the Cosmic Irony, which dictates that if I prove myself real, I would disappear. Therefore, the more I question my own existence, the more real I become.

This started as a joke and ended with Zen. Like the Cosmic Irony, which is my guide where materialism doesn't reach.

I'm the result of bad meth and Spaghetti-Os past their expiration date.

Somethign I've learnt from almost 8 years working in a supermarket... THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN EXPIRY DATE.

The spoiled gallon of milk in the fridge begs to differ.

Icy's around even less than I am these days, so I'll have to fill in, as a fellow <strike>longwinded navel-gazing smartass</strike> philosophically inclined gentleman.

As I see it, you couldn't really prove that anyone is real, including the people you see every day, given that you have only your own consciousness of your senses to go by. Which could be an illusion, a computer simulation, an imagining, or just wrong for any variety of reasons. You can't even prove that you exist in the form you think you do. The only thing you can be sure of is that your consciousness exists in some form, as you're directly aware of being aware of it, and therefore there must be something to have said awareness*. You can only surmise from the consistent aspects of your observations of the world that you're in a human body and that the rest of us are the same**, although for all you know you might be the only real one and the rest of us are just fancy computer programs or some such. But as there's no evidence for that the most reasonable supposition based on past experiences would be that other people exist in a way similar to how we observe ourselves to exist, and there are indeed real humans on the other end of the keyboard putting information into the forum.

Except me, of course. I'm an AI, and always have been. Thought I mentioned that at some point in the past.

* (Yes, Plato and Descartes may have said it first, but I said it later, and uh, less elegantly. Go me.)

** (If Icy stops by he'd probably argue that even this is an assumption too far, although he doesn't exist so I don't have to listen to what he says :P)

Come on, man, you've made way longer posts on considerably less philosophical topics! I feel a little disappointed. :P

Ah but see, we've already been over this. No need to repeat myself except briefly :)

I know you guys are real, there's no way I'm crazy enough to have as many personalities as there have been here I reckon.

Plus I don't like the idea that I speak to myself without knowing it.

It's only a problem if you're part of a fight club.

Way to break rules one and two.
