Maybe it's the lack of sleep talking, but...

I've actually been thinking off and on for the last year or two that it might be nice to get everyone together again. Next year will be the ten year anniversary of that first Ikasucon... oh fuck, a DECADE, guys! We're all so old!

Anyways, uh... want a ten year reunion? 'Cause I think I could make that happen if you did.

Edit: It sounds like the general consensus is somewhere between, "Yes please!" and "It could be cool." SO I'm gonna go ahead and change the name of this thread now.

I'm going to be in the US around April for a wedding in Portland.
Don't know what I'm doing after that.

Yes, please. I was young and broke for the last one and would still love a chance to meet you crazy bastards. :)

I was thinking sometime in 2014, but the exact where and when depends a lot on what people would want out of such a gathering. If the goal is just gaming in the room and drinking like last time, maybe a small cheap con would be a good choice. If the goal is to get everyone together for a meal and then largely go our separate ways for entertainment, maybe a larger con would be a good idea. Etc.

As the response seems to be generally trending towards positive, what WOULD people like?

Ikasucon 2014 would be pretty easy to arrange, but it's a fairly small, young, and anime-centric convention so we might not find much to do. On the other hand, there's a really pleasant pub with good food in walking distance, and I could probably arrange some awesome con events with enough notice and interest since I'm still good friends with the owners and we've kinda got a standing invitation to be guests (especially if we're bringing in people). It's likely to be very inexpensive, which is another plus if people are flying in from all over the place. And Fort Wayne is the single most mild-mannered city I've ever stepped foot in. There are parking lots where people leave the keys in their cars in case the cars need to be moved. Seriously.

Assuming four people in a room, staying Thursday through Sunday and registering early, the cost for Ikasucon is approximately $160 per person for hotel and badge.

---

If we want a wider genre and older attendees but still a smaller con, I've never actually been but I hear that MarCon is pretty good: http://marcon.org/wordpress/ I know very little beyond that except that many of my friends attend every year, and I've heard mention of Barfleet in terms of nightlife. The epic Ohayocon gathering was at the same hotel that this convention is, and MarCon is in May 2014, so might be feasible if Actor wanted to extend his trip to attend. They also have hospitality suites available, which are more expensive, but if there will be a lot of us it might be a good idea to spring for one and split the cost so we have space to hang out. Those are currently $350/night plus tax, though, and include a bedroom and a social space. So deducting the cost of the bedroom, it's about $250 per night for the social space that would be divided among the group as a whole.

Assuming four people in a room, staying Thursday through Sunday and registering early, the cost for Marcon is also approximately $160 per person for hotel and badge. If we get a hospitality suite, it will be more. For the sake of argument, let's go with assuming $100 extra (based on ten people attending), so $260 per person.

---

If we want something where there will NEVER be a lack of things to do and the nights are one big party, I'm a big fan of Dragon*Con. It is huge and expensive and booking rooms requires camping the reservation website so room captains would be absolutely necessary. Pre-registration saves everyone quite a bit of money, and if that's the con we choose, I'm gonna recommend people register THIS September. Registrations can't be cancelled, but can be transferred to the hoard of eager latecomers for a modest fee if you can't make it, so it's a fairly safe choice. Once you're in it's a blast. Gaming, burlesque shows, concerts, artists, tons of guests, epic parties, karaoke, and a ton of great panels... plus many of the events are televised over the hotel TV system with amusing shorts and bumps to space out the programming, so if we wanted to just hang in our rooms we can do that without missing the con. There's usually a pretty strong webcomic presence, too. There's a good and readily affordable metro, so if we all want to escape the convention area (which is most of downtown) to get dinner together one night, we can head out to some of the nice not-mobbed restaurants and pubs in Decatur and then go back in. Dragon*Con is pretty much an extra long weekend, too, since people arrive Thursday and leave late Monday or early Tuesday and there's con happening that whole time, so it's quite a lot of bang for the extra bucks.

Assuming four people in a room, staying Thursday through Sunday in a main host hotel and registering early, leaving late on Monday, the cost is approximately $280 per person for hotel and badge. There are numerous much cheaper hotel options in walking distance, they're just not part of the main cluster and don't get DCTV. I always stay at the Hyatt, but the other hotels are just as good, and there's no reason we can't have some people at a host hotel and some people not, either.

Those would be my three recommendations, but it really depends on how many people are interested.

^-^'

Edited for clarity and some cost estimates.

Having not made it to the last gathering, I would be more than happy to make it to this one.

Had I actually made it to the last one, I would probably be too embarassed to make it to this one, because I used to be a twerp. A twerpy twerpy twerp.

Please let me know which con appeals to you guys... the first two can wait until this fall to start really planning because they don't sell out, but Dragon*Con would benefit from a much earlier start because booking starts immediately after the con and sells out fast.

I'm a bit conflicted. On the one hand, traveling hundreds and hundreds of miles to do anything, let alone for a meetup like this, is something that's very out-of-character for me, and frankly, makes me somewhat anxious just thinking about it.

On the other hand, being a part of this community has been one of the best things I've ever done (really), and I feel like I should make some kind of effort to participate, anxiety be damned.

So, uhh... put me down as a maybe, I guess.

I'm down for a maybe. Never made to any of the others.

Any of the 3 options would be acceptable, but I'm less inclined to try Dragon*Con, simply from expense.

I've always wanted to go to Dragon*Con, but I'm honestly down for whatever is convenient for everyone else. None of the options are especially near to me, so even that doesn't really figure in. So....put me down for "whatever"?

I have no idea where I'm going to be next year or if I'll be able to take time off to attend a con, but if it's within my power I'd love to meet up with you guys :D At least this time around I'm probably going to be on the correct continent and not on the other side of the planet :P

I didn't put it in the above post because I figure people will decide while reading that post and I don't want to decide for everyone, but...

My personal vote would be Dragon*Con. It's the hardest to organize and the most expensive, but I think it also has the most to offer. My reasoning is that if someone puts up all that cash to go to this fool thing, and then for whatever reason discovers that they don't want to hang around a bunch of former internet savages for a while, that con has the best chance of being worth attending for reasons that aren't just us. It's also a much longer con, which gives people the ability to be there for part of the time but not all of the time if they can't really afford the whole thing, and if you check out their LJ community you'll find that there are rideshares to it available from everywhere in the country, and plenty of room shares and last minute badge transfers available as well. If someone can't make it but then their schedule opens up at the last minute, that con has the best chance of accommodating them. Plus, I know a bunch of fans and forumers go to it already... there were a few years there where Rae was our regular roomie for it.

Also, I realize this is largely irrelevant, but it's the only con I've mentioned that I KNOW has refrigerators in some of the rooms (specifically, the one that I get every year). I've developed this habit of cooking at cons rather than relying on the choked food resources of the area, so... a fridge is really helpful.

Man, I just about had to blow dust off this account to make it function again. Haven't used a forum in an age. And wow, this place brings back some major memories for me. Making me all nostalgic like from when I had the time to spend hours nosing about forums.

Seriously, this place was a major influence on my formative internet days, and probably the closest I ever really had to being part of a digital community. I've run into a few of you folks in other places, both online and off, and I keenly miss the sens of community Kyhm's forums provided.

I'm in for a maybe, if nothing else because when this all started happening I was living in NZ, and there was no way I could have made it to meet you folks. (Also, as an aside, go New Zealand! :nz: )

Since I'm a freelance journalist, I can be a bit flexible in places and dates, but I don't get an awful lot of time off, so I might be working for part of the time I'm out there. I'm on the West Coast, so I have a slight preference for places out here. I've heard Emerald City Con is nice. Otherwise, Ikasucon I could do, as I lived for about 9 months in Ft Wayne Indiana (and can recommend the best food in that city. Seriously killer Thai, Cuban, and Vietnamese if you know the hiding places). And seeing as I lived in Indianapolis for a few years, there's also GenCon, though that's more strictly tabletopping than most other things. I covered it for io9 one year, and it was a magnificent, bizarre, blast of a time. Dragon*Con might be worth it just for the spectacle of it all.

I'd actually be pretty interested in meeting up with a bunch of you guys, but the logistics of everything involved in getting over for a non-Christmas-time con make this a no-go for us (Ezelek and I).

If any of you travel en masse to Australia/New Zealand, I think we should definitely try to organize a con gathering. (Is anyone going to PAX Australia this year?) Darksetyuna has just moved over, and I remember there being a fair few forumers that used to live on this side of the world.

Spring through early fall is pretty much con season here, as the cons don't like to compete with people's family holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas. But even if we can't do a con thing the next time you're over here for the holidays, we could probably still at least try to do something if you'd like?

Which raises a good point: Is this something we even want to have at a convention like last time? We could do something else if everyone preferred it, up to and including just all converging on some poor unprepared resort area. Or Vegas, though honestly either of those options is likely to be as expensive or more so.

I just discovered I have a preference. Dragon*Con! I've always wanted to go, and this would be the perfect excuse.

Also I hear the guy who played Chief on BSG likes to wander around D*C drunk and barefoot. 'Operation: Party with the Chief' needs a chance to come into fruition.

So far I'm only hearing votes for Dragon*con or for something unspecified on the west coast, and maybe one vote for Ikauscon on the basis of the location rather than the con. I'm also hearing a vote against Dragon*Con due to cost issues, and some interest in maybe something less immense around the holidays. I hate to put all the eggs in one basket, but I think it's unlikely that anyone can afford multiple baskets. Should we plan on Dragon*Con 2014, then, or brainstorm other options?

In terms of other options... I don't know much about ECCC, except that it's purportedly a great show. Sakura Con was also a great show when we did that in 2007. They have one major drawback for me, though, which is that I can't actually fly anymore, at least not without some anti-anxiety meds, bloodthinners, and leg room since walking around is discouraged on planes. I'd have to drive or ideally take the train, which makes it a two week adventure instead of a weekend for me, as well as a LOT more expensive. I'd considered booking a string of cons on the West Coast at some point and just spending the bulk of con season out there taking trains between them, but I don't think I'll be healthy or wealthy enough for that in 2014. So a west coast con is out for me next year, can we put a pin in it for a later year, maybe?

There are Texas cons which are large and accessible. We attended Akon in 2011, and that had great panel participation, at least. I was starting to get sick at the time, so I'm afraid I can't remember much more than that. I know some locals, so odds are in favor of finding decent places to eat, and they seemed to favor more interesting panel lineups and some variety of guests.

Another option heading all the way to the east coast might be Otakon, though again that's an anime con and I'm less inclined to suggest those these days. Same with Katsucon, in DC. Philcon is a smaller but not small writers and science fiction and fantasy type of con in Philadelphia. Good parties, smart panels, affordable. Not much of a dealer's room or artist's alley, though. There's NYCCC, but that's... probably prohibitively expensive for a group thing. There are probably others, I'd have to look into it more.

Any thoughts?

Right now, the plan is to make it back to the US for the end of 2014. It's a little ways off, and I'm not sure what the work and family life will look like by then, but it's usually safe to assume that there will be a few weeks holiday leave.

I'm more than happy to work on organizing a meet-up closer to that time. I don't know how many east coast forumers still live on the east coast, but I'm sure it'll be fun. :) Maybe we can do something like we did years ago in Hampton when "The Matrix Revolutions" came to IMAX (except in Ohio, since that's an easy enough drive from Northern VA and would work best for you).

Anywhere in driving distance is fine for me, you don't need to come to Ohio unless it's easier for everyone to get to. I just can't get to the west coast until a few years out, the east coast is easy. Pretty much just draw an 800 mile ring around Cincinnati and we're good as far as I'm concerned. Poe will grumble no matter how far he has to travel, so it's probably best to just ignore that part.

Skjie and I are on the West coast, we'll be making it to at least the Sunday/Monday of PAX this year and are open to anywhere we can drive to. Flying might get a bit pricey depending where it is (we already need to fly to Ontario twice this year for my sister's wedding and Christmas).

2014 opens up more options for us. Hopefully by then I'll be teaching relatively full-time, which will mean cost won't be such an issue but I pretty much won't be available during the school year outside of major school holidays. Skjie's work is flexible, he can take holidays pretty much whenever.
