Some right-wing religious people object to the vaccination of young women against HPV (Human Papillomavirus), which is the major cause of cervical cancer, because that virus is transmitted sexually. As one commentator said, "that would be like objecting to a cure for lung cancer on the grounds that it would promote smoking".

I dare anyone to defend this idiocy. I double-dog dare you.

Yo. The reason they called sex "a fate worse than death" for women in Ye Olden Days was because proper young ladies were supposed to be willing to die rather than give up their virture. Like those schoolgirls in Kenya who were burned alive because the men around them wouldn't let them leave their dorm in their nightclothes.

Here's an article detailing this sordid affair, for the interested: http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascit ... 897100.htm

Anyway, there is absolutely no defense, and those who shot down Perry's order are absolutely morally, intellectually, and rationally bankrupt.

Beyond that, there's not much to say besides :smith:, I guess. :smith:

EDIT: In the SA Thread about this, some goon is defending it along the lines of, "Well, why should MY tax money pay to save all these OTHER people it's not like it's polio or something :V". Watching the rest of D&D jump all over him is mildly amusing.

I recall something down here about a problem with which vaccine provider Perry wanted the state to use, like they were a campaign contributor of his or something.

Texans don't relate well to politics, or enjoy politics. So unfortunately the political system is more often than not left up to a small government of corrupt assholes.

 And whatever one might say about Texans, it was the rest of the states who voted for those same corrupt assholes to run the entire country.

Chto za khuynyah?

To those of you who do not live around Russians, this translate roughly to 'what the fuck?'.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Welcome to the real world of mysogyny. This one happened only a couple of years ago. I vaguely recall reading of occasions like this in Victorian America and Europe.

The blogs that follow the HP vacine scandal have fun digging into the public statements of the right-wing activists who are fighting it. If you can get past the PR training and push their buttons, you can generally get some snarling version of "Those little whores should just keep their knees together!" The underlying truth, blurted out.

Ultimately, these are ultraconservatives trying to repeal the 20th Century. They don't think women should be having or enjoying sex, and if doing so gets them beaten or raped or diseased, its their own fault and they deserve the punishment.

I will note that this is still not as much hostility towards females as you find in more traditional societies. Female genital mutilation is still practiced in Africa among Christians, Moslems, and animists. The height and weight differences between male and female adults are exaggerated in certain Asian societies because, among the poor, if there is limited food available, male children get more. So girls suffer selectively from malnutrition and stunted growth.

And, of course, in some "modern" social circles in India and China, the male-female ratio is 52/48 instead of 50/50 (+ or - a half percent) because of selective abortion and abandonment of female offspring. One source notes that Chinese orphanages in some provinces are 95% female because of the abandonment of daughters.

Post subject:  Hm. Is this too inflamatory? I'm still coming down, it's hard to tell.

I can't see the issue with giving parents the right to say "Don't prick my girl with that, you prick."

Besides, what're the odds they'll contract cervical cancer before they're 18, and able to make their own descisions? On a personal note, I hope the odds are quite high. No particular reason, mind, just because I like big statistics.

Also, socialism leads to having a larger-than-usual number of lazy fuckers, unless you beat them properly. And then everyone gets jealous of the guy who gets to beat people, and that's just not fair to them. Thus, socialism = unfair.

Before I go spare on you -- how serious was this posting? Sometimes, sarcasm on the Internet goes awry, and perhaps I am missing your point. Perhaps, though, you're taking my dare. The thing is though, to me this issue has lost even potential for humour (thus my topic heading!) and so I am initially inclined to think it is the latter.

Do you think parents should have the right to deny their children other vaccinations, because they think mercury causes autism or that the it's a government plot to inject tiny microphones into godfearing Americans or whatever? Parents shouldn't have the right to put their children's lives in jeopardy.

Funnily enough, a provision for parents who wanted to opt out of the treatment for ethical reasons was included in the bill. It was still shitcanned.
