*wakes up from serial lurk mode*

I have:

- 2 sticks 512 DDR2 PC4300 RAM
- 1 GeForce 6800 GT
- Processing power clocked at 3.4 Ghz (Pentium) (I think it's dual processors I'm not sure)

What's the cheapest way to increase my performance? And more importantly, which part is going to need upgrading first?

Very much depends what you do with the machine...
Where do you notice the performance lacking?

And before you talk about getting new parts for a machine, make sure you know what you have to start with. "it might be dual processors but I'm not sure" amused me! I'm assuming you mean one dual core processor (as checking if you have two separate CPUs is as easy as opening your case and looking for the two great fat heat-sinks and fans that live atop them).

It isn't a multiprocessor.

Dual core Pentiums don't have that high of a clock speed and if you had a computer with two CPU sockets you probably wouldn't be asking this question.

you probably should tell us what motherboard you have.

Must be an old P4 (E?.. not a dual core anyway) and I'd bet the motherboard got an agp slot... not much to be done, if it is so...
keep your money until you've got enough to change everything.

the obvious answer is to get a new graphics card.

Even versus doubling ram?

Your platform is between 2 to 3 times better than what I use...
What do you do with it man? Compile 3D animation?
Seriously now, what did you failed to do that you decided you need an upgrade?

yes. Adding more ram might make games load faster, but wouldn't make them more pretty with better framerates after they're loaded.

Of course you never mentioned what you need better performance in. I assumed it was video games.

No, this whole thread was an excuse to show off what he has
he was hoping everyone would reply in a way similar to Gazing Rabbit

I didn't really fail to do anything. It'd just be nice to be able to play games at 1280X1024 without either turning the graphical settings down fairly low, or having FPS drop below 40. 60-75 would be nice, but I'm not looking to put down +400 for a graphics card (Contrary to popular belief, people who live in their parent's basements DO have bills...)

*googles*

Hmm... at that price, no thanks. I also asked because I want to get the jump on things before everything needs upgrading at once. It's a 2 year old Alienware Area-51, so nothing to sneeze at, but I've let previous computers go 5 years without any upgrades then kicked myself when I noticed I was below the minimum reqs for most games.
