Post subject:  Podcast recommendations thread (OF DOOM)

The impetus for this thread is fairly simple: I need something to listen to during my lunch break, and have already heard enough conservative talk radio to write most of their shows for them at this point (Hannity: "Republicans good, Democrats evil", Limbaugh: "Democrats stupid and evil, Republicans not conservative enough", O'Reilly: "Democrats bad, Republicans sort of ok I guess", Savage: "Liberal Pinko Swine are scumoftheearthhowIwishicouldscrapethemtodeathwithmyownteethuntilthestreetsrunredwithcommiebloodarrggbibblle!!!–that reminds of this one time I was planting tulips in my father's garden as a kid…", yadda yadda)

I had been listening to the Physics for Future Presidents lecture series, which I finally tried after mistakenly assuming they would be too dumbed-down to be interesting. It's taught by one of the co-creators of the Nemesis hypothesis, is actually a pretty good refresher on general physics in preparation for taking classes again, and taught me various neat things I wasn't aware of, like the sound channel in the atmosphere and how it relates to what happened at Roswell. I'd recommend them to about anyone, especially the early ones on energy and nuclear power that have more real-world application.

I also enjoyed the Penny Arcade podcasts (IE6 doesn't format that link, incidentally) in which they just turn on the mic while creating the strip a surprising amount. It's funny even when they're just riffing on stupid things their kids did. Not recommended for anyone who doesn't follow game industry news, though.

Anyway, I ran out of the above and need more stuff to listen to. And I figured a place for everyone to recommend their favorite podcasts (yes, yes, the term is annoying) wouldn't be out of place, as I can't find any in the archives.

So, recommend me some good MP3s-on-RSS-feeds-but-we-can't-call-them-that-because-that-would-be-common.

(Also, before anyone asks, the reason is that "of doom" makes anything better.)

Personally, I'm very fond of Escape Pod, which has some of the best recent short scifi to be had. Almost always worth a listen.

The Physics of Sex unfortunately does not update often, but is damned interesting when it does. Their 'cast about orgasms as a way to stop hiccups was intriguing, and actually explained why some of the old wives tales about hiccup cures would work.

I was gonna say Penny Arcade but you've already got that

Yeah that's about the only podcast I listen to

(I have nothing useful to contribute)

I used to listen to the firefly/serenity podcast but after I got over it all I just dropped all casts from my comp. Which was a decent few as I went through all the archives. It was okay, although they had people calling in from all over the fucking place and there was always one chick withthe most monotonous voice who would ask questions and solve puzzles.

Hey, thanks. Reminds me of when Selected Shorts on NPR used to coincide with my lunch break, except in my preferred genre.

I havent listened to the other one yet, as it seems like it might have found a way to actually make the subject of sex boring, but Ill take your word for it and give it a try :)

One I forgot to mention before is 1ups podcast, which actually seems pretty good. Ive only listened to a couple of the E3 wrapup ones to see what I missed so far, but the hosts annoy me less than the other gaming-news podcasts I tried.

And what, no one else listens to any <strike>theyre just MP3s dammi</strike> podcasts?

i know a wanker who makes a podcast.

because of this wanker, i cannot divorce the concept of podcasts from the concept of podcasts.

because of this debilitation personality flaw, i cannot listen to podcasts.
