Whilst browsing Wikipedia looking for filth to masturbate to before an editor removes it and makes me masturbate to pictures of Neil Patrick Harris and Plaid(oh god that took an hour to finish mostly because the Plaid slowed me down a lot) I found an article on School Uniforms and how they're only in about 21% of American schools, quite the opposite of Australia where in Brisbane there are two schools that I know of that don't have a uniform, Indro State High and that other place(the Independent School which may have been closed down in the last decade, good riddance you hippy fucks).

So I was wondering, given that this forum is for Serious Business, what's peoples opinions on School Uniforms? Hell if thats not interesting enough then whats your opinion on education in general.

I'm in favour of school uniforms mostly because it helps to remove one of the gaps between richer students and poorer students and also keeps young people in line.

I always considered that terrible logic. It doesn't.

It did ruin my ability to choose my own clothes when I was allowed to dress freely. In 2001 for the first time in my life I had to pick my own clothes out for seven days in a row. Until then I'd had a uniform for the weekdays and a uniform on Saturdays for work then I'd have to pick something to wear on Sundays.

I made some bad choices back then. Hawaiian shirt choices.
With shorts.

I still make those choices.

I'm personally against mandating what people have to wear.

School uniforms don't really bother me. Around here the only place that has a school uniform is a lutheran private school that costs $5000 or more a year to go to. And uniforms don't solve gaps, they just mean that you have to be a little be more selective on how you show your social status.

school uniforms are awesome because they cover fat and other unwanted things teenagers tend to overexpose.

I'm against mandating for fuzzy reasons.

im indifferent towards the uniforms.
On one hand, it is easier for me as a parent to get their clothes ready.
On the other hand, My kids have their own fashion sense, and both of them pick out better outfits for themselves than I do for them, And I love to see their individuality.

It also gets them ready for the "adult corporate world" where suits and ties are the norm, sadly.

Blue Sun Missile
thinks the uniforms are adorable, but the prices are rising every year, BEYOND typical inflation.

I went to a rather fancy Anglican school, where the uniforms were outrageously expensive, and had more pieces than I care to think about. Consequently, any social differentiation minimisation attempts were sadly lost, as you could always tell who had the fancy new uniforms, and who had to go dredging through the second hand uniform store.

I personally loathe school uniforms. But I suppose that's because my hometown school's changed to them when I was in 7th grade. Until then we only had a dress code. Which was fine with me, I've always been the jeans a T-shirts kind of person. The uniforms didn't do anything. There were still cliques. The "rich" or preppy kids still wouldn't talk to the others. We all still knew. And it didn't make people behave more, if anything they behaved less. It was such a relief to move here to Virginia in the middle of my senior year and be able to wear whatever the fuck I wanted.

Anyway. In short: uniforms are retarded.

i am for school uniforms with short skirts and tight busts. and made rrom latex.

all schoolgirls should be kitted out in fetish gear. and if they are fat and ugly, we give them say, 5 years to see if they turn into hotties, and kill them if they don't.

this is the world i see when i close my eyes and smile....

Against. Rich kids who want to show that their rich will just find other ways to do so, it really doesn't solve anything. It merely puts financial burden on the poorer families to comply with the school's uniforms, if the uniforms aren't provided for them.

And personally, I think it inhibits creativity. It's your childhood, it's one of the most imaginative times of your life. Clothes are a way for a lot of kids to express themselves creatively. It's a shame to see adults shoving kids in uniforms and telling them they can't make their own clothing decisions.

I may not appreciate many trends, (*coughEMOcough*) but I appreciate the imagination behind it. As long as they're not walking around with their naughty bits hanging out, I don't see a problem.

The point of the uniform is to take away the creativity of the kids and make them... uniform. It is harder for the system to deal with people when they have to regulate every minor discrepency, hence a uniform.

That's hardly a good reason for forcing kids to wear a uniform to school. I'm glad I wasn't made to go to a private school. Not that my parents could have afforded one anyway. It was bad having to wear hand me downs to school, but at least I could set my own style.

you're still thinking the system is trying to educate individuals. it's not. it's trying to make more cogs to keep the system spinning.

The society we live in prizes predictability and stability very highly. Individuality and creativity do not enhance or propagate these phenomena very well, so they are ignored or minimized.

A few things.

I think that people are taking the whole "creativity" thing a little too far.
If they did not have the standard uniforms to wear, they will usually end up wearing whatever the current "style" dictates, all decked out in the latest "name brand" that is current. Its just replacing one "uniform" with another

Another thing. The stores that sell these uniforms suck. My friend had purchased a hundred bucks worth of uniforms for his daughter and ended up losing out because they were the wrong ones. Not only were the prices jacked to the gills, and the stores was a madhouse due to everyone going for the clothes at the last minute, the big kick in the arse
No refunds.
And it annoys the heck out of me when the school sends a letter to the parents saying that the clothing must be purchased from "this particular store". For new parents to the school, they dont know any better that most of the school will not take any action if the parents purchase their clothing from a discounted store, and that the letter is sent as more of an advertisment rather than a directive.

I have also heard of some teachers asking for certain name brand school equipment to be furnished by the kids to the classroom. I do not feel that the teachers have the right to dictate the specific terms of what "name brand" school supplies to purchase.

Blue Sun Missile
Im done with this

I HAD to buy CRAYOLA colored pencils. Because it's not like I don't buy my art supplies from an actual art store. Also the colored pencils were for econ.
