I never wore what was "in style" or whatever...like I said, I'm a jeans and T-shirt kind of person.

However, I think that being forced into a uniform that makes the skinny chicks still look nice and the fat chicks look like shit is unfair. At least if I was able to wear my own clothes they would be at least semi-flattering on me. Looking like shit every day, and not being able to do anything about it, does wonders to one's self-esteem.

That's hardly a good reason for forcing kids to wear a uniform to school. I'm glad I wasn't made to go to a private school. Not that my parents could have afforded one anyway. It was bad having to wear hand me downs to school, but at least I could set my own style.

you're still thinking the system is trying to educate individuals. it's not. it's trying to make more cogs to keep the system spinning.

The society we live in prizes predictability and stability very highly. Individuality and creativity do not enhance or propagate these phenomena very well, so they are ignored or minimized.

Ain't that the truth. -_-

I didn't give half a crap about style when I was in school. I think when kids are forced to wear a uniform they don't worry about it either, it just becomes a fact of life, you wear what you're told and on the weekends you are free to do whatever you want, which in a way makes them different to weekdays.

I'm not sure how to put it better than that.

It would have been nice to have that much practice with ties, I barely wear them so even now it usually takes me 2 tries to get it looking decent

My only contact with school uniforms was one friend growing up, and she compensated by spending HOURS and HOURS on her hair. Hairstyles apparently replaced clothing and became the whole of Fashion. Also there were ridiculous clique-y rules about how the kilt-pins faced this way to mean this thing, and this other way to mean this other thing, etc.

At least their creativity wasn't being stifled?

I had no social sense to understand clothing until I hit high school, and then it was a crazy Arts high school where the students freaked out and rebelled when the principal tried to tell a boy he wasn't allowed to wear dresses to school. Dress code? What dress code?

Uniforms make no real difference. The kids that demand individuality will get it one way or another, the ones willing to blend in will continue to do so, whether the clothes all match or not.
