It's about goddamn time. Not that it'll do much good, but once it's proved that the monster can bleed, there'll be more lawsuits to come.

They probably won't lose. The whole family are lawyers.
Its like the volume of scum amongst them couldn't grow any more then you find out that.

I don't, and I can't imagine how anyone else would either.

He's suing for emotional distress because some people, in a public space, held up signs. I'm surprised the lawsuit has even made it this far.

Wait I must be mistaken here, I thought that phelps was the guy who ran the antigay church.

I like those guys, they make the anti-gay community look even more worse than they usually are.

Plus their Wikipedia entry is the most fun page to read ever.

They're fuckers, they're trying to make people mad on purpose, and they deserve all the shit people can and have thrown at them. They're basically Trolls for Jesus. I hope they drown in a sea of the lawsuits and hate they've sown.

I wish someone would file child abuse charges against them. They bring their tykes to the rallies with them, and they routinely get pegged with the same projectiles people throw at the adults.

Peaceful assembly is protected by the constitution. To create a law inconsistant with that shouldn't ever fly.

The question comes in as to whether or not Phelps' protests are peaceful. If they are there purely for the purpose to incite violence, or if they cause violence themselves, they are no longer constitutionally protected.

A lawsuit like this doesn't hold much water, as they typically just stand there and yell obscenities. I don't support any restriction on where people can peacefully assemble.

With all that being said, I think he's a total asshole. The way people have taken care of business back home in Texas when he shows up is to get groups larger than the WBC to stand as picket runners to keep them a certain distance out.

I think we should get a shitload of homosexuals to get together outside of WBC in Topeka daily. Get enough of them constantly pestering Phelps, and he'll do something stupid to violate his constitutional rights and then we can lock him up.

Just as a side note, some of the teenage girls in the Phelps clan are hot, crazy but hot.

Thank you Louis Theroux for showing me this way.

They only marry inside the clan. You should go join them and marry one while on sabbatical in the states then take her away to Australia before any of them realize it.

I think it would really depend on what judge they get, this case could swing either way. I know I find it hard to believe that these people don't go out with the intention of causing some sort of distress and malcontent among the events they picket.

I suppose it'd be up to the judge, and his/her interpretation of harassment.

Remember kids: You don't have to respect the principle of freedom of speech if you don't like what's being said!

The Phelps clan is absolutely abominable, of course, but restricting free speech is a dangerous fucking precedent, which should be avoided at all costs.

Harhar. There's a difference between exercising free speech and abusing free speech.

No, not really
And if so, how do you draw the line?
These people are protesting something they truly believe is evil, they're morons but unfortunately they're morons that stay within US law.

[Edit]
This also marks the first time in a debate I've read where I couldn't just reply "yeah what ryven said!"

When free speech hedges into harassment, it's abuse of that right. It's great that we can say what we want and all, but when it's specifically said to hurt or harass someone, why is that still considered alright? We don't tolerate people who harass people in a sexual or racist fashion, why should be be lenient when people harass people in a religious way, to the point that the Phelps take it to?

The freedom of speech, just like any other right, requires responsibility. And using (re:abusing) that right to harass those who don't agree with your beliefs at something as solemn and emotional as a funeral is not responsible.

And this may be just me, but the fact that they send their family members through law school to defend their deplorable asses just testifies to the fact that they know they're walking a razor thin line.

Yes, we do. If you want to stand on a street corner and shout abuses at anyone and everyone, you have every right to do so.

Or at least we do in the US. I thought that's where you are?

And just who do you trust to decide where the line between an abuse of free speech and legitimate free speech?
