A group of Anti-war protesters are preparing to go on a road trip starting from the UK to iraq where they will offer themselves to Saddam as human shields to be placed around vital installations to prevent bombings.

Lets let that sink in for a moment.People are going to go to Iraq.They are going to let saddam one of the worst despots who has ever lived use them as human shields.

My answer is: neither. Delusions of Granduer is more on the mark. They all assume that because they're a bunch of white Americans no one will dare bomb Iraq for fear of hurting them.

Idiots; in fact, the special type referred to by Stalin as "useful idiots." Ready to jump into bed with any dictator who opposes their home country that they so despise. Whatever evil said dictator has done (torture as a method of control, sometimes of entire families, for example) is ignored, because the all-important factor to the useful idiot is that the dictator isn't American (or British or other Western power).

Personally, I hope they sit their treacherous (aid and comfort to the enemy and all that) selves near some targets and get annihilated.

Sure, it takes courage to go and wander around a city you know might not exist as such a few weeks from now. But it also takes a good deal of stupidity, particularly when there's any number of much more effective methods of protest available to anyone with an ounce of imagination and no particular aversion to getting blown up.

Incidentally, these protesters are not (yet) committing treason by what I consider to be reasonable standards. Saddam is not (yet) officially our enemy, as we have not declared war on his ass nor conducted what is euphemistically called "police action" inside his country.

Damn hippies. There are things worth dying for, but preventing a war in Iraq is not one of them. Particularly when our glorious leaders aren't likely to give a shit anyway.

I agree with Clay 100%. This is ridiculous. These people are idiot and will most likely get themselves killed because of it. They obviously don't realize that the government does do some things without alerting the public, so it wouldn't be any problem to them if their plane "crashed" over the mediterranean. Or better yet, it is highjacked and crashed into an afghani cave!

oh, they are idiots for sure...i am far from convinced that war and bombing is the answer to iraq, but i'm also pretty far from caring.

i also doubt that anything will amount from this. i will not be surprised if these fools are stopped at the borders or airports of iraq and told to go home. whatever they say they are, they would be too much of a security risk to go and sit on and 'secret missile bases'.

Hmmm...I watched a program of that. IIRC they WERE gonna head for hospitals and schools and such, and weren't really planning to go and defend big shiny rockets.

I'm gonna go out on a limb though and say that their action may or may not be wise and good. Depends on exactly HOW many civvies would die in the operation and exactly HOW much the situation would improve after the operation. If it's gonna be short and relatively bloodless and it's democracy time afterwards, then some 'shit...well seems this wasn't necessary anyways...Sorry' would be in order, if a lot of people will be dieing for relatively little improvement (the US would REALLY have to be TRYING to make it WORSE then Saddam) and lives are saved thanks to their actions then some 'yay for you's' are in order. Then there's the variable of exactly how much they'll be playing into Saddam's cards.

Regardless whether they're right or wrong, at least they have the balls to risk their lives for what they think is right. That at least gets them a certain amount of respect in my book.

Except these morons are volunteers, and they are likely rich white people with nothing better to do. I dont think the USAF is gonna give a crap if there are rich white hippies protesting outside Saddams palace, they are going to blow it the fuck back to the stone age. The DoD may have some reservations, but Ace McBombsalot will gladly press that little red button.

Now, standing for your beliefs is something i can believe.
But being willing to sacrifice your life as Human Shields is just stupid.
Oh well. If they want to improve the human race by a couple of billionths, send them right in.

FOr one, they believe they won't die, and that even Ace Bombsalot will not bomb them, because if he does, the family of the victims will make sure it's loudly publicated and that will cost the prez votes (whether you think it SHOULD or not) and may very well result in said Ace getting in some trouble. It's not a suicide mission I think. They've got good odds of living through it.

That might be true in europe, Rand, but by and large opinion here is- if you sign up for it, you deserve what you get.

The military people (airforce) I've talked to consider those guys traitors, and wouldn't hesitate to bomb them. These arn't atypical airforce guys either- by and large thats the opinion.

Lastly- I can respect standing up for your beliefs in a rational and informed way (read: none of the people who are against this war.) However, if you're going to ACTIVELY HELP the guy who we're trying to kill (Hussein) by giving him propaganda and aid, why the fuck can't we shoot you in the head as a traitor?

What I've heard, that it's beneficial to Hussein is more of a 'shit well...yeah, can't be helped' thing, so it's not like it's the basic drive of these people.

And the problem is MIB, that to many people 'ratoional and informed' way means 'my way' which basically means YOU can stand up for what I believe is right. So I try to keep a more self-relativizing view of that (up to a point). Sure many people seem to make uninformed and irrational decisions, but for all I know, I'm the one that's irrational and uninformed. And for all we know, you are too. There is no sensible way to use 'I believe wrongly that...." and such.

And regarding treason. Heh, well, I've got traitor in my title and it's not for the show. If it would help freedom or save lives at the bottom line, 'loyalty to my country' doesn't mean jack shit to me.

And the thing with the air force guys is that they're not the ones that elect the prez are they? (okay, they're AMONG them but still) Sure there'll be people who won't shed a tear if those people return home resting in pieces, but a good deal of other people will I think, shed tears and make a lot of noise and cost a lot of votes Enough people to make sure that any target with a living American shield would have to be REALLY important to be bombed. (so no hospitals, food storages, residential areas wich IS where these people would go too)

Air force guys may or may not care about killing those people, but the higher ups will, and the higher ups can really fuck up said air force guys so....
