OK, this is a real question on a Criminal Justice exam. Assume you are a cop in the scenario.

Edit: Remember that you are IMMEDIATELY FACED with this man. not across a parking lot or two miles away, or being briefed on his condition at the station, not even in a car.

I assume this is a use of deadly force question. This depends on the circumstances. Obviously, the first question would be if the deranged person is a threat. If he is brandishing the knife, and perhaps stabbed or threatened to stab someone, then shooting them would be the most logical course of action. Unless there is some other easier way to disarm him and calm him down, violence is the answer. You would not be able to reason with them.

This is a real question on a exam?It seems like every answer here though is a bit extreme or off.While I would probably shoot first and ask questions later the other options don't seem realistic at all.I mean wouldn't learning how crazy this guy is before going out after him be a good choice?Or maybe learning just how much a of threat he poses?
But considering the choices given using deadly force seems to be the right one.

Personally, I would deliver a non-fatal shot, disarm him, then provide medical care to make sure he survived and recieved mental care. But that's just me.
