may I remind you, Ollie that the U.S. was the second to last Country to sign the convention. in 1972,, followed 2 years later by japan. so the stuff wasn't illegal, for us.

i always remember the claim (not found any first hand evidence of the quote etc) that someone moaned about the US treatment of ppl in Somalia in relation to articles of the Geneva Convention, a US commander noted that they were there as UN peacekeeping troops, and as the UN had not signed the convention (is it a country? aaah..) then the rules didn't applly for him and his men

i rad it on a rabid anti-american, arab website (silly squiggles everywhere) but still, it soulds like it could/should be true, letter of the law rather than spirit etc

by the way, Kurdish convoy hit earlier today, cartch this report http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/video/39058 ... 135_vi.ram from John Simpson moments after it hit.. he's full of holes as he speaks, fighting off a US special forces medic as he reports...

Form what I understand, it's true, the UN has not signed the Geneva convention, and UN peacekeeping forces are not bound by it.

and technically the UN is a police (peace) force, not an army, so as i said earlier, like a national police force, are again not covered by the Geneva Convention

now you see why the UN could be such an effective force, less little rules in the way of them getting the job done

the US' 'war on terror' also puts them in a questionable position on the Convention, as they're not engaging 'regular' armed forces (see Afganistan) so are not bound to treat them as soldiers, see Camp X-Ray etc, when does a riot (where none-leathal chemicals are normals used by the army) turn into an insurection, or a war?

it's law, it's all in the details y'see, if you want it's easy to explain away how you got around certain international laws etc
