A few days/weeks ago, I had some free time on my hands, so I let my mind wander and I started thinking about random stuff off the top of my head. Somehow, my train of thought moved onto sadness, woe, etc etc, and how come so many people seem to submit themselves to this (I'm looking at you, Mr. Angsty LJer #256)
And then, I realised something.
"True Happiness" is really nothing more than the ability to adapt and to cope with life.
Think about it. Take a look at Mr. Joe Blow Happy-Go-Nuts. His life is pretty good, and he feels happy. However, his life is pretty easy, and hasn't been tested yet. Is he truly happy? Well, it really depends on how well he's able to adapt. For example, if, say, his wife dies, his happiness will be gone. If he grieves, and learns how to cope and adapt to the loss, then he will be happy again. However, if he isn't able to cope with the pain, he will continue to be unhappy.
This also leads to another detail...strength. Lets face it, life sucks. A lot. However, people can learn to cope and adapt to some of the more unpleasant happenings in their life. If they succeed and manage not to be broken, they'll grow stronger for it. They'll become stronger people, who are better able to cope and adapt to worse happenings. However, if they don't manage to cope or to adapt, they become...broken. Some of them are louder about it (FUCK YOU WORLD!), some of them are quieter about it (*snifflesniffle, cries themselves to sleep*)
In short...
Inner Strength/Personal Fortitude + Adaptibility = True Happiness
