This is basically the same topic as "what is morality?" is it not? The only difference I can see is in a moral system where the ends outweigh the means, and you're not sure what the ends will be, so you have to question whether or not you're bringing about the right ends. This, however, is a fairly minor point, I think that if it's just info you want, looking through the archives would be best.

Amen, MiB.

No, really, this asumes an absolute immutable morality set apart from humans and their society. And not explicitly believing in such a thing, I can't comment.

Basically, from my point of view, if YOU think you're acting morally, and others agree, then you are.

I gave you a starting point, now go at it.

Which kind of morals? Indivdual morals or societal morals?

[insert long rant in which I basically repeat the same things I've said in half a dozen other threads concerning morality]

"What are morals?"

There, presentation is done. Should your teacher not approve, use flamethrowers and napalm upon him/her and the school/college/whatever, saying you are sacrificing them to God, so it is entirely moral. When in court bring out proof by quoting biblical passages encouraging the sacrifice of humans. Get the bible banned as hate literature, and then the 2 billion christians start a war, and human society is knocked back to the dark ages. Then say it was completely moral because since there is no more poor to be exploited (since there is no longer money). Yeah.................

Since this is Darkie's essay to write, and knowing she's in IB, I'm guessing that your paper is about 1497 words too short.

Eh... I knew a guy who walked into a pysc exam.

Topic: Why?

He wrote: Why not?

The teacher gave him 100%.

I recall a similar example. Students walked in one day to find a chair placed on top of the teachers desk. The teacher walks down the aisles and hands each student a sheet of paper. At the head of the paper is a single sentence. "Prove to me that the chair on top of my desk does not exist." A minute later, one student stands up, walks to the front of the room, and hands the paper back to the teacher. Written below the sentence are two words.

"What Chair?"

I disagree with most of the above posters: they say they have already answered your question, while I say it's a new question, though possibly a trivial one. Any philosophical question contains traps. As when writing a computer program, consider precisely what the question is, not what the questioner might have meant by asking.

You are acting morally when a moral (i.e. an ethical statement, or a rule about how to behave in whatever circumstance) informs your action. You are acting immorally when you know you are contravening such a rule and feel bad about so doing. You are acting amorally when you just don't care what the rules are.

If there are no rules then there is no question of morality. That state of affairs, however, is outside the scope of Darksetyuna's query. She did not ask, "what do we do when there are no rules"; she did not even ask, "what are the rules". From her perspective, those other questions are as straw men.

correct.

so, the question is: How do we know whether we are acting in a 'moral' manner?

considering that a moral = a self imposed/followed 'rule' of conduct then the answer has four points:

1. You are acting morally when a moral informs your action.

2. You are acting immorally when you know you are contravening a moral

3. You are acting amorally when you just don't care what the rules about morals

4. If you have no morals then there is no question of acting morality.

then all you need to do is put an example forwards for each instance and there you go, job done.

pretty simple really.
