So, I was talking to a friend and I'm kinda curious as to what you all think.

When ever I hear someone I know isn't even registered to vote I yell: "get out of my country!"

Is it better to convince people to go out and excercise their democratic rights, even if they vote retardedly, or for them to ignore the whole "democracy thing?

From my standpoint? If you're stupid and uninformed, please do not attempt to cancel out my vote with your own.

But really, I couldn't care less.

well I still think voting should be a privilege, not a right, and as such should not be given out so easily nor left unused

I'm voting, NDP, because they agree with my idea of a fair criminal system. I feel that the time will be better spent of more important crimes. Hard drug, violence. Leave the hippies alone.

"Vote retardedly"? Please elaborate. If you're talking about voting for the porn star running for governor (California recent Governator election), then I guess it doesn't much matter. If, on the other hand, you're talking about voting Libertarian, Socialist, Green, etc. get your head out of that log.

People vote the way they wanna vote, if you think that they're all retarded, I guess you're entitled to your opinion, but you might as well expatriate yourself as cause a scene. There's no one who say's you have to associate with us morons.

"Vote retardedly"?

To vote based on a snap decision. To walk in and vote based on what name sounds nicer. To vote without thought. That is voting retardedly.

Bah, I live in Texas, aka Bush Country. Bush is all but gauranteed to win Texas, so my Democrat vote literally does not count. I did vote in the local elections 2 years ago where my vote would've counted a little more, but the republicans nearly swept all major offices in Texas anyway.

However I am a registered voter and the walk to my Elementary school (where voting takes place in my district) is only 5 minutes from my home. If I have the time on voting day, I will vote Democrat this November.

I would prefer people to vote, and give some thought to who or whcih party they are voting for. Ie, dont just walk in and choose one at random, or the one which sounds/looks nicer.
My theory is, that if only people who thought about their voting choice voted (ie, didnt vote as stated above), then the government would be a likeness of what we as a community truely want. Otherwise, it just may as well be pulled out of a hat, with all these careless voters picking one at random.

I tried to explain myself as best I can, sorry if I fucked up.

My vote matters more in the local elections and issues than the presidential election, where there electoral college will have already made its decision before my absentee ballot arives. Which i suppose is just as well, since i'm still not sure weather i should vote for a pay raise or the right to get married. . .
Too bad Wes Clark is out of the race. A Clark/McCain ticket would have been awesome.

Care to run that by me again?

Democracy is based on the idea that a million men are wiser than one man.
Let's play that one again too. Who decides?

I feel your pain. I live in Texas too, and I know my non-Republican vote will be about as useful as pissing on a forest fire. I would love to see the day when our country abolishes the defunct Electoral College and just simply replaces it with a direct popular vote. I think more Americans would be inclined to vote if they knew their ballots were going twoard something, rather than just being snuffed out entirely by the Electoral College. However I doubt that would ever happen, considering how our nation's two controlling polarized parties both support the Electoral College. I suppose they want to prevent any third parties from gaining any political leverage, and the Electoral College is the best way of keeping them down.
